Mataafa is elected king of Samoa in Washington official information. Promoted ensigns Ward and Buck who spied in the Spanish-American War. Manila cables hint at significant war news from Iloilo amid a shakeup.
Des Moines Iowa January 10 1900 interest grows in the Iowa senatorial contest between Gear and Cummins as legislature members to be elected later will decide. Cummins opens campaign headquarters with Carroll Wright likely to lead, Allison supports Gear, and factional backing from Judge Carr and A P Fleming.
Christian Phillips, 34, a finisher at Madison Street Manufacturing, fired a revolver in front of E. W. Church II on the third floor. He drank muriatic acid, then jumped from a Milwaukee and St. Paul bridge into shallow water. Charles Johnson, 20, an ex-soldier, dragged Phillips to shore. Phillips likely to die.
Multiple reports from Indianapolis Terre Haute Bridgeport and Des Moines detail failed consolidation talks between Citizens Street Railway and City Company. While Father Baur tends firemen after a fatal blaze in Terre Haute and Ellet Beesley vanishes from Bridgeport, Ada North dies at 59, first librarian of Iowa após seven years at the state university library.
A head on collision between two Lehigh Valley passenger trains at West Dunellen New Jersey on January 9 or 10 left thirteen dead and over twenty five injured. The crash followed a freight wreck at Bound Brook earlier that day and was blamed on bad train orders and a prior incident. Rescue operations and coroner inquests followed as engineers and passengers endured horrific scenes and injuries.
A wreck blocked the east bound track forcing Lehigh Valley trains to use the west bound line toward New York. Train No. 20 split into three sections, carrying 400 excursionists from Mount Carmel Shamokin Mahanoy City Hazelton Ashland and Ploisy le. The local 71 between New York and Bound Brook ran late after the mishap. Engineer Rick was gravely injured and blamed misordered instructions as the cause.
In the excursion train cab Engineer James Prendergast and fireman George Cheshire observed the local as it began the curve with a shrieking whistle and braking.
