President McKinley sent Jasper Choate of New York's nomination to the Senate to succeed Hay as ambassador to Great Britain. Other items report four people killed by the Pennsylvania Express near Larmier station, and Navy plans to assemble ships under Admiral Sampson in Havana for West Indies duties.
In New York on January 11, Sharkey defeated McCoy by knockout in the tenth round. McCoy showed little offense from the start as Sharkey controlled the bout with body shots and sharp lefts. McCoy toppled after a left to the neck, rose, but was declared out as the referee ruled Sharkey victorious.
A Peoria Hebrew man sought an injunction against death arguing a fortune teller set Jan 15 as his doom. Officials had no jurisdiction and the tale underscores faith in prophecy. Vandals in Chicago removed three bronze plates from lampposts at the Public Library. Mrs Charles McQueenan of Grand Rapids Michigan was found dead in a Renton hotel room in San Francisco. she hanged herself. Charles S. Thomas was inaugurated governor of Colorado in Denver. Carlisle R. Clark of Rockford Illinois, former Illinois division commander, Sons of Veterans, was dishonorably discharged by court martial. A reward of five hundred dollars was offered for John Kennedy’s arrest in the Macomb Missouri train robbery. Henry Bante, a Hamilton Ohio grocer, shot his wife Anna twice then killed himself. the wife’s condition is uncertain but she may recover.
