Germany to seize Vavoa over debt at Friendly Island

Special dispatch reports the German consul arriving at Toga the capital of Friendly Island and warning that Germany will seize Vavoa, the fertile group, unless the government pays the private debt owed to a German company. The government denies credit responsibility and the king seeks help from England America and France.

Sequel to Arson Case. Man Sues Prosecutors for Damages

Fred Schmaedeke of Kankakee Illinois files a 25600 damage suit against Traders Insurance Company Chicago German Insurance Company Freeport and their agents alleging conspiracy to use criminal process to extract policy payout funds. He says after his Gilman pop factory fire in 1895 he paid creditors with insured money and faced threats of criminal charges. He was tried for arson in 1896 acquitted on retrial last month. He was jailed over a year, returned to find his wife filed for divorce for desertion and abandonment.

Quay Case Taken Under Advisement In High Court

In Philadelphia on Saturday the state supreme court heard the petition of Senator Quay and others for a writ of cer...ori to move their case from the Philadelphia quarter sessions in a conspiracy charge. The court took the matter under advisement after three hours of argument by eminent lawyers. The session elsewhere covered the DC appropriation bill and related matters, while Milwaukee reported a divorce, Joliet mining law talks, and other regional notes.

Tin Plate Plant To Be Built At Wilmington Ts Joliet Ill

The Wilmington Tin Plate company formed by Joliet promoters will erect a six mill plant on eighty donated acres near Wilmington, sixty miles south of Joliet. Costing 150000 dollars, it aims to produce 135000 boxes annually and employ 400 workers. Incorporators include T W Jenkins D T Lewis and Wm Dougall with Dougall providing 250000 dollars in capital. The company vows not to sell to the trust and plans to be in operation by June 1.

Year of wrecks list highlights railroad crime in Cincinnati

A Cincinnati paper reports a tally of last year s railroad crimes with twenty incidents including eight train hold ups seven stage robberies five deaths and four injuries among passengers and crews. The piece notes no Mexican robberies and adds a Brooklyn death report of William Peak at age ninety four. A separate Washington item discusses a bill to revive suits against federal officers and expansion policy remarks.

Fullenweider a Free Man Forgery Case Ends In Acquittal

John C. Fullenweider of Indianapolis was found not guilty by a Crawfordsville jury after a trial on forgery charges. The defendant, visibly moved, greeted jurors with thanks as family members cried during proceedings. Judge West released him on recognizance noting unlikely future trial on a second forged instrument count.
