Ottumwa man Stevens chosen as one of four vice presidents for the National Retail Shoe Dealers Association at the Chicago convention last week. He has served as a director of the association for 20 years.
Harlan David K. Brown, publisher, names County Attorney George Hurley acting chairman of the Shelby County Republican central committee. He will serve until a permanent choice is made by the county committee.
Waverly-Frank Sager who just finished a decade as Hremer county sheriff and served on the grand jury inspecting the jail reports that the jail meets satisfactory conditions following the review conducted by the jurors.
Cedar Rapids officials under State Secretary of Agriculture Mark Thornburg launch food dairy and weight measure checks in Linn Johnson Iowa and Benton counties. Inspector F D Ford says the aim is compliance without prosecution and sanitation will be stressed.
Ottumwa readers learn that county crime cases in Wapello will cross paths with the Moons as father and son work in prosecution. John D. Moone, newly appointed assistant county attorney at Ottumwa, follows in the footsteps of his father E. G. Moon U.S. district attorney.
Corning Lawrence Wecckman was held on a bread and water diet at Adams county jail for refusing to work with other prisoners on the rockpile. Earl Gibson ordered the diet for Weckman and another striker. After one day the prisoner agreed to work, and all prisoners were sentenced to hard labor.
Jimmy Edson an 11 year old skater acted heroically when his chum George Phinney suddenly broke through the ice at Storm Lake. Jimmy laid on the ice and pulled his playmate to safety from icy water over his head.
James H. Whaley, then 14, wandered during the San Francisco quake and fire of 1906 and settled in Council Bluffs as a railroad worker. After years of correspondence, he contacted his mother, Mrs. Clara C. Whaley, in San Francisco last August. He traveled to San Francisco last week and told her he had become a grandfather, contrary to her belief for many years.
Des Moines area roadhouses briefly kept beer taps and lights off after midnight Saturday. Polk County Sheriff Vane v. Overturff said authorities asked the establishment owners to comply with the law, noting this was the first time in years the venues observed the midnight closing.
Davenport Henry Ruwe aged 650, a former semi pro baseball manager, died in a car fire after his vehicle ran into a ditch on a side road near Walcott. Deputy Sheriff Peter Dittmer said loss of control and a leaking radiator allowed alcohol to feed the blaze.
Washington and Valley St Pauls Evangelical churches installed new officers and reported a strong year. Both congregations paid all budgets, with Washington reducing debt by twenty percent and Valley debt free. Officers named include presidents, secretaries, treasurers, and various leader roles across Sunday School, Ladies Aid, Dorcas, and Young People groups.
At a Washington bicycle battalion meeting held Saturday at the Y a brief bicycle court cleared Santos Hernandez on riding double after Judge Eleanor Tucker impaneled a jury. Thirty three members attended. next Saturday will hear at least four cases as the court continues its education of riders in single file discipline.
California assembly plans to draft a bill awarding Tom Mooney more than one million dollars for 22 years imprisonment. Co defendant Warren Billings may receive a similar sum. Mooney and lawyer George Davis declined comment.
A large crowd attended the Silver Anniversary service at the Christian church yesterday morning. Charter members and about thirty organizers from 25 years ago were honored, with special recognition for the group and the pastor’s message “The Church Cannot Fail.” A silver anniversary reunion with a potluck dinner is planned for Wednesday evening, followed by a program and department reports.
Roberta Arthur, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs R E Arthur, was brought to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City Friday with an infected ear. Mrs Arthur is with her in Iowa City and reports the ear is draining and Roberta is getting along well.
SNAKES OUT EARLY Mel Crandall reports see ing a bull snake about three feet long on the roped south of town near the Ward Eaes ley home. It's almost un heard of for these snakes to be out in January, for they are usualy holed up for the winter at this time. It's all due to the unsea sonable weather we're hav ing. When it brings the snakes out in January it really is abnormal. Yesterday's high point here was 54 degrees, with a low of 48 last night. The rainfall amounted to .16 of an inch.
The contest board dismissed Robert KE O'Brian's petition contesting John Wessels's short term as secretary of state in good faith findings. Costs are taxed to O'Brian as the Democratic official, with delay and lack of timely action noted.
Des Moines report notes Gov. Nelson G. Kraschel used two years in office to issue 20 pardons 31 commutations and 127 suspensions. Citizenship restored to 726 people previously stripped of rights. In contrast Gen Clyde L. Herring as governor pardoned three reprieves 26 commutations and 165 suspensions restoring rights to 966. Former Gov Dan Turner pardoned three commutations 165 suspensions and restored citizenship for 747.
Authorities across four states pressed a wide search for two crazed convicts Frank Haines 26 Chicago and William Batz 22 Maine after one of the four escaped from Lima Ohio even as Marion Pierce was captured. Brucks 34 Hamilton Ohio had been captured earlier following a raid on an Omaha National Guard armory where a guard was wounded.
A six week old baby boy slept in a blue trimmed bassinet in St. Joseph hospital maternity ward. Officers searched for the baby's parents after they abandoned him and left him in a farmer BE Baker's car in Centerville business district. The farmer was surprised by the discovery. Also noted are travels of Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Simpson and daughter Bonnie Jean and Mrs. Laura Longwell with short visits and Civil War battlefield stops.
Richard Long of Washington plead guilty in district court before Judge P. J. Sievers to breaking and entering. Sentencing set for Jan 11. He confessed to multiple burglaries including Farmers’ Store on North Iown avenue and admitted thefts from Oct 15 and Dec 19, with other incidents under investigation.
James Turley Foster age 62 of the Highland area died at his home three miles northeast of Haskins after a year of ill health. Heart disease listed as cause. Funeral set for Wednesday at the Presbyterian church in Haskins with burial in Alosworth cemetery. Foster born July 11 1876. survived by wife Susan Thoma and five children with nine grandchildren.
Joyce Ann McGill 3, daughter of Charles and Viola McGill, died after a backing car ran over her at 809 North Avenue D. The child, playing with her dog, chased by her grandfather’s car, was fatally injured and died at the county hospital. She leaves sister Betty and brother Charles Lee. Born April 2 1936 in Washington. Funeral at L A Jones funeral home Tuesday at two in charge of Rev Mundy.
John Romosier 79 died this morning at Washington county hospital after being found unconscious at his Wellman farm. He likely suffered a stroke while preparing for bed Friday night. Born January 12 1859 in Baltimore he moved to Iowa as a child. He leaves a son Arthur and daughter Maud Lankin along with several siblings. funeral plans remain incomplete with services likely in Wellman.
Martin White reports the death of cousin Gilbert White in Duluth Minnesota on Friday evening. The 65 year old was auditor for the Great Northern Railway at Duluth and will be buried in Brighton, the place of his birth. He was the last of his family and survived by his wife and one son.
Des Moines January 9 Iowa 48th general assembly opened with John R Irwin Keokuk named speaker of the house after a swift organizational session. Lt Gov Valentine presided while the senate began at 10 01 am and Frank Hallagan Des Moines opened the house at 10 11 am. The house and senate adjourned briefly for credentials then reconvened. party majorities stood 38 to 12 Republican in the senate and house. Irwin released a seven member committee to study state government reorganization and pledged cooperation with Democrats in a harmonious session.
The Washington township Farm Bureau to meet Wednesday at 1 50 PM in county agent W. J. Roudabush's home. H Roudabush will demonstrate new meeting procedures and how to distinguish quality farm paints from inferior products. Each member family urged to attend.
The Rural Mail Service will survey Wellman Iowa routes to see if one can be eliminated after the retirement of Willam Turnipseed. Joseph St Crossett takes over Route 3 while a decision is made. The aim is to shorten deliveries and cut costs by removing a route if feasible. Factors include delivery times road conditions and terrain.
