Newton Des Moines finance officer Tom O'Dea said a thief stole a leather jacket from his car in the business district. The jacket pocket contained a diamond engagement ring valued at 175 dollars, a surprising find for the thief.
Police found a 59 year old junk dealer in a residential alley believed to live in the citys hob o jungles. Coroner W. F. Shelley said the man, whose name could not be learned, likely died of natural causes.
Ottumwa waterworks trustees report that five mills may be cut from the next city assessment in return for $85,000 to cover bond services. The move would reduce taxes by about 23 percent.
First Christian church members in Shenandoah were shocked as a farm laborer, paid by the month, placed ten ten dollar bills in the Sunday collection. The unmarked envelope directed funds for redecorating the building and the minister Rev. M. F. Ly erla knows the donor but will not reveal his identity.
Jefferson County Attorney George C. Van Nos land filed information charging A L MeIntire with felonious arson to defraud the insurer. MeIntire, arrested Saturday, confessed to starting a fire with a candle and newspapers after removing his wife and three children from the dwelling.
Des Moines highway patrol officers are to issue warning tickets to truck drivers who fail to display rear directional signals when hand signals are not clearly visible. The action reverses a prior halt following an injunction petition by truckers claiming the law is unconstitutional and costly.
Waterloo report: prisoner Fred Dugan, 24, worked nights for a week attempting to cut into a drainpipe with two hacksaw blades. He damaged the basin in his cell but could not bore into the drain line while being watched by Sheriff H. T. Wagner of Black Hawk county.
Emmetburg Iowa three Estherville men Melvin Hill Norvall Morgan and Myron Hull received five year prison terms in Anamosa for stealing two tons of coal from the Rock Island railroad. Cletus Gunnerson got a 30 day jail term in Emmet county jail after pleading guilty. They admitted boarding freight trains at Livermore and hauling coal to Wallingford for pickup by truck.
Lewis A. Harrison, 76, married Helen Iverson, 29, in Dubuque after a long-ago fondness. Harrison, widower, once gave the girl candy and walked her around Mc Farland, Wisconsin, when she was a child. The ceremony took place in Justice Michael Hogan’s office with 47 years between them.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the 1937 farm mortgage moratorium extension law invalid, holding conditions from 1933 no longer exist and that moratoriums require an ongoing emergency. The decision reverses Scott County and Story County cases, remanding to lower courts.
Mrs. Frank Fowler of Keota wins $2,400 damages after a Keokuk County district court jury finds Doyle Wagamon of South English at fault in an automobile crash near Kinross on July 17, 1938. Plaintiffs’ counsel were Dunham Morrison of Washington and C. G. Updegraff of Sigourney. defense was Frank Beatty of Sigourney and Walter K. Stewart of Des Moines.
State highway official L McKinnon met Washington county supervisors to discuss funding for county roads. If the legislature approves matching funds, the state will grade and bridge a five mile stretch west from Brighton to the Keokuk county line and extend toward road No 77. A new Wassonville bridge over the English river in Lime Creek township is also favored for state and federal aid.
The National Bank of Washington convened its annual stockholders meeting with 398 of 600 shares represented. President R E Dougherty presided, and secretary Ed Muck recorded proceedings. Re-elected directors include Dougherty Wilson Stewart Gilbert Crone, with officers to be chosen tonight. The bank reported a strong year with higher deposits and improved footings compared to the previous year.
Lester Orr was re-elected president for a second year at a Washington country club board meeting. Vernon Crull was elected vice president and Will Harwood re elected secretary and treasurer. Committees were named for Finance Grounds House Tournament with members including C R McCutchen Dr E E Stutsman Vernon Crull A E Baldrige and T R Phillips.
Yesterday marked the warmest day of the season with a high of 59 degrees, near setting a January record for warmth in the area. The temperature eased to 32 degrees overnight.
Sen A Claire Dewey of Washington joins Colfax Smith and A J Shaw to seek abolition of the Iowa state planning board the return of its funds and property to the state Dewey attacks the board calling it largely useless and claims it has spent near a half million dollars since its founding.
George Fields Washington high school principal spoke to Presbyterian Men after the brotherhood dinner at the church. He described the shift in the secondary system toward preparing students for community life and employment, not only college. The Ladies Aid society served.
A running gun battle on the Des Moines outskirts ends with ex convict Lee Jackson, 22, dead after being shot by Detective Geo Cessna. Jackson was wanted on Iowa parole violations and for car thefts in Missouri and Kansas. He fired at the detective as he fled and hid behind a garage before the fatal shot.
The January term district court grand jury was impaneled this morning by Judge P. J. Siegers. Members include Merley of seventy six township W N White Crawford H R Morgan Kalona A J Nichols Wellman H J Myers Cedar Earl Schuerman Britannon Lewis Coon Highland.

Rev Vernon Carter of the Christian church was chosen president of the Washington city ministerial association at yesterday’s annual meeting. Secretary Leigh W. Soule of the Y M C A was re elected secretary and treasurer. The ministers formed a committee to coordinate with the chamber of commerce centennial celebration planning for the community’s 100 year anniversary this year.
At a Rotary club meeting H Wichelmann general freight agent for Keeshin Motor Express traced trucking’s rise from a two decade old small start to its current nationwide reach. He said short hauls profit from trucks while railways handle long hauls, with highways and cooperation reshaping the nation’s transportation system. Local Keeshin rep Klein joined, and new members Dr T M Mast and L E Travis were introduced. Mr and Mrs Reed were Sunday dinner guests.
The Washington State Bank renewed its board of directors at yesterday evening’s meeting. G N Barclay, John Fr Foster, W W Jarrard, George L McDaniel, Ernest Knotek, Dr W L Alcorn and Sidney Moore were re elected. A 12 percent dividend was paid and deposits rose to 1 13,237.16 by Dec 31.
Ed Sponberg died yesterday at his home two miles east of Olds after a nine day illness from pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at his home Wednesday at 1 46 PM and 2 PM at the Mennonite church in Wayland, burial in Sugar Creek cemetery. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Floyd Grecian and Mrs Sherm Wolfe, a second wife Nellie Eddleman, one granddaughter Judith Ann Grecian, and five siblings.

Des Moines reports INS Governor N G Kraschel summarizes six years of Democratic governance, compares to prior administration, and issues a set of recommendations. Incoming Governor George A Wilson will deliver inaugural remarks tomorrow. The plan includes labor dispute revisions, four year term proposal, cabinet appointments by governor, and funding for state publicity.
David Fitch Kirkpatrick died at his Wellman home at about 9 30 this morning from heart failure. He was born December 15 1845 in Bond county Illinois and lived in Lexington Pilot Murghe area before moving to Wellman in 1885. He married Cassieton Turnipseed in 1870 and remained in mercantile work across several Iowa communities. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
DES MOINES Representative James A. Lucas of Taylor announces he will introduce a bill in the Iowa house to regulate drilling and operation of oil wells in the state. He says the measure is precautionary not based on expectations of large oil finds in southwest Iowa.
