Dr. Kurt Lewin, Iowa City professor of child psychology and child welfare at the State University of Iowa for the last three years, will go to Harvard University about February 1 to lecture during the next semester after receiving a leave of absence approved by Iowa.
Harold J. Kriebs cashier of the National Bank of DeWitt disappeared after leaving a Chicago hotel. Police state and federal agents are conducting a nationwide search as bank officials disclose the incident.
Union county supervisors announce an immediate 10 percent slash in relief costs with gradual month to month decreases and staff reductions at the relief office. The move aims to meet a financial emergency from the withdrawal of state aid except partial unemployment aid, as the 144 mill tax limit yields only 28,000 for a program costing 65,000 last year.

Mrs. Albert Atwater aged 95 longtime Iowa City resident since 1878 died at her home Friday. She was grandmother to Mrs. Philip K. Wrigley wife of the Wrigley Gum Co. president. Survivors include son Bert Atwater of Chicago three daughters Mrs. F J Carlson of Mason City Mrs. Margaret Atwater of Bloomington and Mrs. C Schra der of Town City and sister Mrs Helen Fitch of New York.
DES MOINES The Christmas mail spree is over but the Des Moines postoffice still has 24 643 undelivered greeting cards. They bear wrong or missing addresses and were not deliverable under directory rules. The cards will be destroyed. postage on the misrouted mail totals $369.64.
Washington County health unit reports increases in smallpox measles typhoid and tularemia during 1938 compared with 1937. Smallpox rises to 28 with Cedar township outbreak. measles 33 cases. typhoid 2. tularemia 3. Scarlet fever and whooping cough drop from 1937 levels.
Funeral services were conducted at L. A. Jones funeral home for William Allen who died yesterday at the county home where he had resided since October 1924. Dr. Arthur Atack led the service and burial followed in Woodlawn cemetery. He was a son of Sol and Rebecca Allen and survives a sister Mrs. Ella Eaton of Oakland California and a brother Joe Allen of Brinmar Pennsylvania.
A spectator at a basketball game in Strahm, Iowa, died from a heart attack during today’s event. Authorities note the incident occurred in the gymnasium as fans watched the game unfold. The deceased’s identity and funeral arrangements were not released.

Mrs. Chris Wyse of Wayland sprained both ankles after a fall from the hay loft while helping with farm chores. Her husband Mr Wyse has been ill for a month. Their daughter Mrs. Paul Witrig and her three grandchildren from Imlay City, Mich., are staying with the Wyse family as Rev. Witrig attends a six week Bible course in Goshen, Ind.
The Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association reported a near half million increase in insurance in force to 20 123 359 26 dollars at its annual meeting at the Congress hotel. Secretary Charles Kennedy cited new insurance of 3 430 150 26 and cancellations 2 968 674 26 with a net gain of 461 476 26. The treasurer noted 50 617 18 dollars in claims paid and 3 500 policy holders, about 95 percent of the county’s farmers. The 65 year old group elected five directors, reelecting all officers including Ira A Coon president and Kennedy secretary. A memorial resolution honored James J Benda.
Washington organizations sponsor four lectures as part of a national movement for world peace. The Institute of International Understanding will run from January 27 with three Friday sessions in February. Rotary International will supply speakers and local groups sponsor. Admission is free. daytime talks target high school and junior college assemblies. evening sessions start at 7 in the high school auditorium. A county 4 H club party will be held at the Washington roller skating rink on Tuesday evening January 24. Invitations will be issued only to those enrolled in 1968 or those back to 1939. Entertainment includes talking pictures and clips from the 4 H club parade and related show scenes. The event is limited to 4 H members, adult leaders, spouses of readers, and board members of the Farm Bureau.

John and Wilma Stephens, students at Iowa Wesleyan College, have resumed classes after visiting their parents, Mr and Mrs Sam Stephens in Ainsworth for the holidays.
Gov Olson of California grants a full pardon to Tom Mooney. Mooney leaves San Quentin in an escort to Sacramento, where he is to be exonerated for the 1916 preparedness day bombing in San Francisco. His wife Rena and sister Anna join in the public farewell as his mother had died years earlier.
Des Moines report states Sergeant Martin learned that Harry Nestle was demoted from assistant chief of patrol to patrolman. Nestle entered the station saluting and identifying as Patrolman 87 while Neal queried for orders. The secretary of state allegedly sanctioned the demotion leading to the surprising scene at the patrol station.
DES MOINES approximately 800 local Democrats attended the annual Jackson Day dinner at Hotel Fort in Des Moines tonight. The Democratic chairman announced the event with steaks priced at 29.95 dollars for 26 dollars, amid attendance and party fundraising notes.
Clinton The case of M Mario Stewart againe at the Clinton National Bank was settled. Mrs Stewart will pay 84 100 in settlement of her notes, with interest bringing total to 55.0. The bank covers costs of effort. Stewart had asked cancellation of notes given in payment for 50,000 worth stock in Pointer Brewing. She said she was induced to buy by former officers of the bank, including J Anderson, former president.
About 200 Iowa farmers file claims for refunds of the processing tax excluded from the federal program of 1934. A Jolsen, secretary of the Nation Farmers' Processing Tax Recovery association, says response in Des Moines has been great with deadlines missed. Claims argue farmers paid the processing tax instead of neckers. nonparticipants did not receive benefit payments to compete.
