The price of gold rose to an eight month high on the free market to 42.45 dollars an ounce. Traders attribute the gain to higher U.S. bank lending rates Middle East tensions and hints of changes in South African sales.
Des Moines Iowa United Press International reports that school superintendents are being asked to have students provide their school district name and code on new state income tax forms. This data will be used to calculate school district aid from the state and is to be relayed to parents and guardians.
Washington Public Library trustees voted Tuesday to decline a bequest estimated at more than 75000 from the late J B Dill. The funds would have funded a new library, but the trustees said the current building suffices and a new facility would be costly and unnecessary. If declined, the estate passes to the City of Washington for capital improvements benefiting residents.
The Washington Business and Professional Women's Club pledged the first funds for a youth summer employment program in Washington County. CAP seeks further commitments by late January or February to decide on continuing the two part experiment funded last year by the Iowa Employment Security Commission and Ottumwa project.
United Press International reports a travel warning for Iowa with occasional snow and strong northerly winds 30 to 40 mph, turning colder. Tonight lows drop to 5 to 10 below zero in the northwest and up to 5 above in the southeast. Thursday remains mostly cloudy and much colder with additional light snow east.
Wellsburg Iowa Republican Rep Harold O Fischer proposes a 3 percent tax on the sale of trading stamps to merchants to raise state revenue without harming taxpayers or companies. He notes the figure could change as the bill is drafted and cites S and H Green stamps and Gold Bond as examples affected. Fischer expects revenue gains but acknowledges opposition from stamp company lobbyists and uncertainty over precise figures.
Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman proposed extending family food assistance and food stamps nationwide. He urged testing in slum and rural schools with food management firms to provide lunches. Freeman testified before the Senate Hunger Committee chaired by Sen. George McGovern, who warned malnutrition affects at least 10 million Americans. McGovern predicted federal guidelines to assure underfed Americans access. Freeman argued 480 counties lack food programs and urged shared local admin costs, lower food stamp costs, national income standards, and direct federal operation if local standards fail.
