The Washington Jaycee Ettes ask residents to send or call by January 30 with names and addresses of Washington County servicemen stationed abroad to remember them on special occasions. Mrs. Lyle Edwards is the current president.
UPI reports Viet Cong emerged from jungle positions to fire on American GIs from close range. About 1,200 U.S. troops joined the battle, surrounding and pushing the guerrillas into retreat overnight. An estimated 54 guerrillas were killed as they scattered.
Rebuilding of the Grandview corner at the junction of highways 92 and 61 in Louisa County is scheduled for 1969. The Iowa State Highway Commission includes the project in its five year construction plan with an estimated cost of 401000 dollars.
In Iowa a winter storm forced more than 100 schools to close or operate with limited services as snow and ice packed highways hindered travel. Temperatures ranged from 10 below to 10 above, with highway patrol reporting heavy snow and ice on I 35, US 69, I 80, and other routes. Newsrooms fielded constant calls, airports faced delays, and responses emphasized safety and emergency use of rescue units. Salt and sand crews worked overnight as Des Moines prepared more supplies to clear streets.
In Des Moines UPI reports District Judge Gibson Holliday took the case under advisement after two days of Polk County hearings. The suit seeks a temporary injunction to block valuation increases in 71 of Iowa’s 99 counties amid claims the order would delay regular tax collections. Testimony covered administrative delay claims, operational burdens, and the need for timely equalization across counties.
American and South Vietnamese negotiators met in Paris to craft fresh allied proposals aimed at unblocking the Vietnam conference. Vance planned a high level session with Pham Dang Lam to resolve seating and speaking order, with a Washington Hanoi encounter expected early this week. Officials anticipated no delay from the new Nixon administration.
Washington city council approved an ordinance allowing apartment houses in more areas with size limits tied to number of family units. The meeting also praised snow removal crews and urged timely car removal from streets. A Wayne sweep er purchase was discussed with bids sought. Charles Crull was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission to replace Harry Turner.
A 16 year old juvenile aided by a city policeman a sheriff s deputy and a highway patrolman was arrested after break ins at Dr Gregory s veterinary office Firestone Store and a local residence Monday night. He entered the vet office took money then broke into Firestone Store stealing rifles shells and cash. A pursuing officer tracked footprints in snow and found the suspect within two blocks of the store. He is jailed awaiting further action and is being questioned about other break ins.

Interest grows in forming a regional health planning council to coordinate health services across Benton Cedar Delaware Iowa Johnson Jones Linn and Washington counties. The Linn County Health Center organized the meeting in Iowa City January 14 with about 225 attendees from medical, hospital and related groups. Opportunities to share personnel and facilities aim to improve care where full-time physicians are scarce and staff shortages exist. A second February meeting may set organizational structure.
