City of Washington to hold 8 p m public hearing on January 11 to construct a new water tower and mains and to consider bids for furnishing water and water service for the city with estimated needs of 200 million gallons a year. Law requires the notice though bids may be rejected. dreams of owning a water company appear unlikely.
Powell of Richmond and Rehnquist of Phoenix were sworn in as the 99th and 100th justices. Chief Justice Burger welcomed them and noted the court now has nine members with conservative direction for years of work ahead. Powell will head the 5th Circuit and Rehnquist the 7th, covering several southern and midwestern states.
Clear with minor temperature changes and night lows in the teens to near 20s. Saturday brings partly sunny skies and warmer highs, reaching the upper 30s to low 40s in the northeast and mid 40s in the south and west.
An American helicopter opened fire on South Vietnamese troops in the Central Highlands killing one soldier and wounding five. Another U.S. helicopter was shot down in the same area, wounding its three crewmen. South Vietnamese forces crossed into eastern Cambodia after B52 raids on North Vietnamese positions. A Communist radio broadcast urged the 95B regiment to move west into Cambodia as airlifted South Vietnamese units joined the action.
Iowa State Education Association president Walter Galvin says the group has 26 votes to stop the Senate from ignoring the collective bargaining bill this session. He cites polls showing 92 percent public support and notes bipartisan backing from 1969 and 1970 platforms. The bill is not on 1972 priorities list. The ISEA will press legislators over the weekend to build support.
First District Congressman Fred Schwengel in Washington County urges a guaranteed House vote on any pay raise for Congressmen and backs rescinding the 1969 increase. He met constituents in Washington Katona and Riverside and spoke to Mid-Prairie High School students about economy and welfare.
A young Washington County connected couple and the building owner were found murdered in a Hilo, Hawaii, apartment after the Days had moved there. Tom Day, 24, and his wife Wendy were killed along with the owner. a baby was unharmed. The Days had lived in Hawaii about three years and were friends with the Listons.
In a letter from the Western White House President Nixon says he will be a candidate for renomination and re election. He will permit his name in other primaries but will not campaign actively or personally in them. Former Gov Lane Dwinell released the letter at a news conference in Concord New Hampshire.
Republicans in Washington County will have a sheriff primary as Robert Swift a former deputy and local restaurant owner announced his bid for the Republican nomination while incumbent Don Robertson said he will seek re election. The county Republican Central Committee heard Swift speak this morning.
One hundred five telephones in the Ainsworth exchange were out of service Sunday January 2 an aerial 50 pair cable was shot twice. Most affected lines were in rural areas. The outage began at 1 30 p m and service was restored by 5 p m.
Washington County officials wrestle with apportioning about 23 000 dollars recovered from former district court clerk Robert Porter. The bonding company has paid 10 000 dollars and a pro rata plan may favor 43 percent to all claimants, while the attorney general notes all funds are county money. The question centers on who gets paid first for fees and other obligations, amid a nearzero chance of full recovery.
Bomb squads in New York Chicago and San Francisco found explosive devices in bank safe deposit vaults after anonymous letters claimed a nationwide campaign. Devices varied from half pound smokeless powder to black powder with calendar clocks, with several banks named and the names Christopher L Mohr attached to box rentals.
