A trailer fire started Saturday morning when a local plumber thawed frozen pipes with an acetylene torch. The mobile home, owned by Margaret White, suffered considerable damage but was not deemed a total loss. Providence fire crews station near 10 a.m. and remained about an hour.
The two story frame home of Robert Jones and family near What Cheer Iowa was leveled by fire Saturday but all occupants escaped unharmed. Jones 55 and two children returned home to find the house burning while Mrs Jones and another child were outside. Officials said the fire likely started near a fuel oil stove in the basement. Firemen from What Cheer and Barnes City battled the blaze in near zero temperatures.
A weekend snowstorm paralyzed much of Iowa with ice and limited visibility. Hundreds of schools canceled, air travel halted, and city call centers jammed as trucks and buses struggled on slick highways. Planes and buses ran late. several crashes occurred, including two light plane incidents. Officials urged caution as icy conditions lingered.
President Johnson told House and Senate Democrats at breakfast that the fiscal 1969 budget should show a small surplus due to strong economy and spending cuts tied to the 10 percent surtax. He will send the final budget message to Congress shortly before leaving the White House on January 20 and did not specify the amount.

Sirhan B. Sirhan, described as eager yet realistic, faces the high security murder trial for Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination. He will be escorted daily from a 14th floor cell to the Los Angeles Hall of Justice amid heavy guard and tense courtroom preparations. Defense aides say he remains cooperative and wants the case to start, while lawyers aim to avert the death penalty.
City and county crews clear streets after a weekend snowstorm with two inches of new snow and .29 inches of moisture.
