Authorities investigate the death of Ed Weber a 45 year old Elma area businessman found unconscious with a bullet wound in his head in his car. A road maintenance worker reported the discovery and Weber died at a New Hampton hospital.
Iowa Treasurer W G C Bagley appointed Edward J Tullis of Ottumwa as state cigarette and beer tax inspector, succeeding S G Graham who resigned to enter private business. The same announcement named Mary Pratt of Clarinda as secretary to State Commerce Commissioner Barr Keshlear.
Waterloo reports Rev Silas Hart a 74 year old retired Methodist minister awarded a divorce from Mrs Sdna DeBolt Hart 56 after he claimed she refused church attendance and used profane language. Mrs Hart not contesting. alimony set at 1000 dollars. The couple had three years of marriage.
The federal government has dismissed the indictment against Charles Brown of Marcus for using the mails to defraud in the sale of pedigree horses. Brown pleaded innocent. trial began last October but was postponed, and he remains free on bail.
A six foot Santa Claus figure used in a Christmas display was found decapitated on a Waterloo funeral home porch after being kidnapped from the John Deere Tractor Co. yard on December 19. The severed head was discovered in a nearby sack filled with toys.
OTTUMWA The Wapello county grand jury with strong recommendations urged strict enforcement of state liquor laws. On court order, officers conducted tavern raids over five nights in recent weeks, targeting violations.
Davenport Elmer McFate a used car salesman was found unconscious at the bottom of the tavern basement stairs Sunday and died Thursday morning. An investigation showed he went to Green Gables tavern to make a telephone call, then apparently fell down the steps.
DES MOINES The story concerns Clarence Beltz 58 of Atlantic who spent Christmas in the Town state penitentiary after Governor Kraschel pardoned him Dec 23. The error was found Thursday and Beltz was released from Fort Madison prison where he served a 10-year term for statutory rape.
Davenport An order in federal court ends the suit of the First National Bank of Burlington against Winthrop Mitchell Co stock brokers who formerly operated in the area. Judge Charles A Dewey dismissed the case after a hearing in Des Moines ending Portipeton bank efforts to collect more than 31000.
Washington file notes the new congress recessing until the weekend as leaders strive to gear up for vast tasks. Roosevelt has already pushed a nine billion dollar budget and an 875 million emergency appropriation to avert WPA layoffs, plus a 1.3 billion arms program, with plans to overhaul neutrality laws and extend expired emergency acts. He also sent a batch of nominations including a Supreme Court pick and two cabinet posts.
Foster C. Foster of Wellman was elected chairman of the Washington county hospital board at the annual meeting. He succeeds Wil Griffin of Riverside. Floyd Letts of Highland township was named secretary. Other members include I. F. Kraemer Brighton Mrs Leslie Gates Franklin township C. J. Jungbluth Walter Brown and Mrs H. G. Richardson of Washington.
Harry Sewell Duncan died yesterday afternoon at 4 30 at Washington county hospital after two years of declining health. Funeral services will be at two o clock Saturday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev E J Shook of Wayland presiding. Born August 31 1868 in Louisa county, he spent life in Louisa and Washington counties, living in Ainsworth twelve years. He married Lillian La nore Orris on December 27 1917. she died May 10 1936. He was a member of the Methodist church at Ainsworth and the Odd Fellows. Surviving are sisters Hattie Duncan of Des Moines and Mrs Molly Fox of Calgary, Alberta. One sister Jennie Morrison died in 1937.
Funeral services for George M. Stewart were held yesterday afternoon at Shemans funeral home with Reverends Nichol Jr and Eastwood in charge. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery with brothers and nephews acting as pallbearers including W Stewart John G Stewart Fred Stewart Ralph Stewart John A Stewart and Cloyce Stewart.
The Iowa state highway commission in its annual report to Gov. Kraschel projects about 6.6 million dollars available for a new program in 1939. Only about 3.2 million will fund new primary road construction, with additional spending in maintenance, bond payments, ROW rights, and engineering. Federal funds total 4.28 million with secondary road funds and grants affecting timing. county bonds add 714 thousand. 1938 work included paving 292 miles and numerous other improvements across roads, rails, and bridges.
Prize bantams from Mrs Delbert R Bailey of Washington Iowa compete for national laurels at the 14th street armory in New York alongside pigeons turkeys ducks geese and other poultry. The show features a South American white fowl and Brazilian Barbados attracting attention as judging continues through Sunday.

Hungarian border guards repelled a crossing by Czechoslovakian and Ukrainian forces at Munkacs on the Ruthenian border. A Czech battery shelled the town after an armored car assault, destroying a theater and hotel as civilians were reported killed or wounded. Authorities sealed the town and blocked exits.

Iowa and 12 corn belt states set 1939 commercial corn acreages totaling 41,239,659 acres across 56 counties in 12 states. Iowa’s quota rises to 9,274,903 acres as all 99 counties joined AAA in 1937 38, with voluntary compliance and soil conservation incentives. Iowa agricultural economists estimate 1938 cash farm income reached 535 million dollars, 32 million more than 1937, driven by higher sales volume despite a 32 point drop in the Iowa farm price index. A man using the name Dan Sherman O Birch en passed a $66 worthless check at an Iowa City hotel and later visited Washington. He claimed to seek information for a magazine article on the Iowa State University football situation, interviewing locals and alumni including Bob Shannon and LeRoy Pratt. He offered $200 for Iowa athletic information that Shannon could not provide. A third unnamed person was reportedly interviewed in Washington. The check was said to be drawn on a New York bank.
A Washi bicycle battalion meeting is set for Saturday afternoon at two. Sponsored by the county safety council and P George Mohr, the session aims to address street violations and plan for a bicycle court session at the Y M C A location.
Nick MccCleery announces a Washington Boy Scout committee meeting next Monday at 7 30 PM in the YMCA. The committee includes representatives from local community clubs and will plan activities for Scouts and begin pre work on a fundraising campaign.
