Medicare drive advances in new Congress
In Washington the drive for a Medicare bill gained momentum as Democrats reshaped the Ways and Means Committee to 17 Democrats and 8 Republicans. The plan, backed by President Johnson, would fund hospitalization and nursing home care for the aged via a raised Social Security tax into a separate health care fund. The shift followed talks between Speaker McCormack and Republican Leader Ford, boosting hopes for early enactment after years of efforts.
