Waterloo reports that sulfanilamide aided the recovery of Police Chief Hugh Crumrine who fell ill with tularemia two months ago. After treatment his fever subsided and a blood test showed no tularemia germs.
DES MOINES George J. Keller Iowa WPA administrator announced the appointment of Mrs. Ermal M. Ahlfors of Dubuque and Miss Jeanne C. Lewis of Sioux City to the WPA professional and service division staff. Mrs Ahlfors will be field supervisor to projects in north central Iowa and Miss Lewis supervisor of a statewide library project.
Des Moines reports Iowa dentists in cooperation with the state health department are testing a silver plating process to detect and halt tooth decay. The chemical ammoniacal silver nitrate is not new, but its applications are. The department provides 663 dentists with the solution free of charge.
The University of Iowa student league voted 24 to 2 to remain in the American Student Association union despite refusing to list Soviet Russia among aggressor nations. The group expressed firm A.S.A. to judge the Soviets as aggressors in a separate resolution. All members present voted.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace cannot speak at the Des Moines Master Farmers dinner tonight due to pressing official duties. He will travel from Washington to deliver the main address at the Democratic Jackson Day dinner Monday night, his office announced.
Kenneth Brown aged 26 pleaded guilty to defrauding an insurer by arson. Woodberry County Attorney Maurice E. Rawlings and Sheriff William R. Tiee announced a fraud investigation that uncovered fake claims, recovered cars, and many auto parts. Brown was sentenced to five years in Anamosa reformatory after admitting he was hired to take and burn a vehicle.
Iowa City reports indicate the University of Iowa Alumni association will elect a president for the 1940 to 1941 war year with candidates W Keith Hamill of Newton or Dr Sumner B Chase of Fort Dodge. Vice presidencies nominated include Glenn Devine Iowa City John Elchhorn Oskaloosa Thomas Gittins Sioux City and Rudolph A Kuever Iowa City.
Tama-Ray Quigley, a fireman, was treated in Marshalstown hospital after a water heater explosion at Central Fire Products Co. He sustained a head wound and a fractured skull from flying debris. J. W. Croshey, the engineer, was reported in good condition.
Governor Wilson asks a court to define the governor's power to waive truck taxes to support reciprocal agreements with neighboring states. The issue centers on licensing taxes and a new compensation tax on common carriers, with prior questions raised by the attorney general.

Policy holders at the annual meeting learned the Farmers Mutual of Washington County now has the largest in force in its 66 year history. Jan 1 1939 in force was 20 133 359 26 with new writing 3 968 204 and cancellations 3 657 408 26 leaving 20 798 685 93 a gain 665 326 67 for the year. Ira A. Coon reelected president and officers and directors were re elected from five townships.
Mundelein Successor mills the same as for the past three years. Over 5,000 policies the association has in force on farm property in Washington county and about 95 percent of the farmers in the county carry insurance in the Farmers Mutual. This association is the largest in the state of its type, restricting business to the county and adjacent townships. The Washington county Farmers Mutual organized April 3, 1874 with 100 policies, incorporated 1883 and re incorporated 190% and 1923 for 20 year terms. It is one of the oldest associations of its kind in Iowa. It has grown steadily over time. WHEREAS the Supreme Ruler called W. G. Huston from our midst after twenty years as director and seven years as treasurer of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Washington County Iowa. WHEREAS Mr Huston contributed to the growth and prosperity of the Association. RESOLVED that in his passing the state has lost a good citizen and the Association one of its most useful and honored members. RESOLVED that we deplore the death of this noble man and extend condolences to the bereaved.
Des Moines reports frigid conditions with sub zero readings across eastern Iowa and lows near seven below in Ottumwa. Forecasters predict snow in western and southern Iowa with continuing cold through the weekend. The weather bureau notes the cold extends to the plains and even Georgia, while Des Moines chills reach one above.
Senator William H. King of Utah urged a Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan to Finland of 25 million dollars to buy food and medicine. He said the resolution would be introduced in the Senate next week and would face isolationist opposition as a test of neutrality.
Charles Bechka, 28, a Des Moines restaurant worker, was sentenced to life in prison for killing his elderly uncle and aunt in a farm home near Shueville Iowa during a robbery that yielded under 20 dollars. He told officers he shot them because the old man kept money in the house. The Novotnys were killed September 9.
Firefighters responded to a 5:30 AM roof fire at the Frank Melinski residence on West Monroe Street. The blaze was extinguished with little damage reported and no injuries.
The clerk of court reports over 30 new cases for the January term to open Monday January 15 with Judge James P. Gaffney substituting for Judge Frank Bechly. From Rovaniem i Finland Jan 6 five Finnish victories on the north central front push the battle lines toward the Salla region about 32 miles from the Russian border. Russian forces west of Salla are deem ed less significant as Finnish patrols gain ground through constant sniping. The strategic impact of the rapid northern successes is just dawning.
Driver's licenses were granted yesterday to five persons by the state highway patrol examiner. Recipients include Charles Lemley Jr of Washington Vernon B Jehilk of Muscatine Leo Nigon of Washington Josephine Speider of Wayland and Wilbur Watson of West Chester. Four applicants failed to pass the driving test. Eight chauffeurs licenses were issued to James Meek of Brighton Robert Martin of Wellman Robert Mishler of Kalona Harold Strum of Washington Omer Conklin of Washington Harold W Miller of Wellman Lloyd Stumphrey of North English and Ernest G Ferguson of Wellman. Four applicants failed to pass the test.
Julius White and his wife of Rolfe Iowa celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary. White nearly 98 years old has repaired watches for over 50 years and is regarded as the nation’s oldest active jeweler. Both have spent their lives in Iowa.
Lawrence Dawson and Mrs J W Dawson returned to Waterloo this afternoon after spending a day with their mother Mrs R A Dawson.
