Des Moines reports Margaret Bagley daughter of State Treasurer W G C Bagley has resigned as clerk in the state auditor's office. Max McMahon of Farragut has been hired to fill the vacancy at a monthly salary of 125 dollars.
Kellogg residents approve a 10 year extension of the light and power franchise for Iowa Southern Utilities Co. by 110 to 45. A 25 year renewal proposal was defeated 148 to 101 last September. Strand Baking Co. workers return after an arbitration deal with Teamsters union ending a walkout over a discharge.
Cedar Rapids District Judge H. C. Ring imposed a one year term in Fort Madison penitentiary on George Hillmer age 40 for discharging a shotgun at his sister Mrs Frank Tepley Jr on the night of December 2. Both Tepley and her husband asked for leniency and said they bore no malice. Hillmer said the act was "a case of too much whisky, I guess."
Cherokee Iowa January hearing bound Stanley Englert 29 Remsen farmer to grand jury on entering bank with intent to rob after confessing armed robbery of Cleghorn State Bank November 24. A clemency petition signed by nearly a thousand Remsen residents is in Englert’s lawyer’s hands.
DES MOINES L F Kiner a state conservation officer in Montgomery Page and Fremont counties has been suspended temporarily for conduct unbecoming an officer according to M L Hutton director of the conservation commission. The suspension followed a complaint by Nebraska men who said Kiner ordered them from the Iowa side of the Missouri river where they were hunting under a reciprocal Iowa Nebraska agreement.
Johnny Cox assistant janitor at the Marion county jail was serving a 30 day sentence for intoxication. Prisoners assisted the janitors in their work and Cox with two inmate helpers drank liquor while sweeping the courthouse corridors.
Waterloo District Judge A B Lovejoy ruled that Mrs. Cora P Ottzen retains a $500 diamond ring. The suit by stepdaughter Anna E E W Anders and her daughter Norma 14 of Dysart claimed the ring, alleging Herman Brasch wished it to pass to his nephew by marriage Henry W Ottzen and then to Ottzen’s descendants as a family heirloom.
Pneumatic master clock in the governor’s office drives a puff system to synchronize clock hands across the statehouse. Leaky tubes and mechanical issues prevent some clocks from receiving sufficient air pulses, causing timing discrepancies and prompting repair efforts.
In the past week fourteen new cars and trucks were licensed in Washington County with six since January. December registrations totaled six, while the last month of 1938 saw seven or eight. There are now 2,184 vehicles in the county with 1940 plates, up from 1,744 a year ago.
James Jones 78 died yesterday afternoon at his home in Brighton after a fall in October left him crippled. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Sunday at his home, with Rev. E S Hiebner presiding and burial in Hillcrest cemetery. He was born January 2, 1862 in Clay township, Washington county, married Sarah M Balderson in 1885, and is survived by his wife, a daughter Rae Saunders, a foster son Edgar Wise, two grandkids, two sisters, and another daughter Bertha who preceded him in death.
New York alumni will honor University of Iowa figures Dr Eddie Anderson Nile Kin and Eugene A Gilmore at a January 13 dinner in New York City. More than 26¢ persons from the metropolitan area are expected to attend at the Western University club.
United Press reports intensified Nazi criticism as Berlin papers accuse Britain and France of planning an attack via Scandinavia. Russia’s entry reshapes the Nordic diplomatic position, while Finnish victories delay German plans and unite Scandinavia against the Red Army.
Nine Soviet planes dropped 22 bombs between Helsinki and Viipuri, setting fire to ten houses and killing two people including a 18 year old. Fifteen women and one old man were injured. Reports say other Finnish targets were bombed, but details were unavailable.
Lorrell Lake was arraigned yesterday afternoon before Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee on a charge of larceny from a motor vehicle. It is expected that Lake will be taken within a few days before a district court judge to enter a plea.

A dwelling at 431 South Seventh Avenue was badly damaged by a fire that started near 10:45 last night. Firemen saved the structure after a two hour battle. Owner John Dusenbery insured. occupant Mrs. Laurene Hagist had no insurance. The fire likely started from a defective chimney. The south part is damaged but rebuildable. occupancy uncertain for now.

Eleanor Cruikshank arrives in Washington to serve as maternity nurse for the county health unit. A University of Iowa trained nurse with public health study at the University of Michigan, she succeeds Pearl Olson after Olson married December 3 to Glenn Blomen.
Iowa officials face a growing pension load as about 25 percent of residents over 65 draw monthly benefits. In November 1939, 53 459 pensioners received 1 017 820 dollars, averaging 20.13 per check, with total appropriations rising to 28 million for 1939 41.
Elder LeRoy T. Nicola 83, the first white child born in Pilotburg northwest of Washington, died Tuesday night in Battle Creek Michigan Sanitarium. A Seventh Day Adventist historian and photographer, Nicola lived in Battle Creek after a long career as pastor across New York and Massachusetts and Michigan.
Coldest winter spell continues across Iowa with ten to twelve degrees below zero highs and subzero nights. Des Moines records eight below zero and state temperatures run about 27 degrees below normal as Atlantic Mt. Ayr and Sioux City report subzero readings. Weather bureau warns of more subzero days and snow in western counties tomorrow.
