Buena Vista county Scots plan the annual Burns birthday party in Storm Lake this Saturday night January 20. President Mrs Archie MacKay of Sioux Rapids coordinates with helpers Mrs Margaret Holt and Mrs Jean Jarnagin to organize the event.
DeForrest Swehla, 28, was shot in the right knee when his shotgun discharged while he pulled it through grapevines during a hunt. The wound is described as serious by officials.
Newton M Perry Smith a farmer from Prairie City died at his home of apoplexy shortly after returning with a bucket of coal to feed livestock. He leaves a wife three sons and two daughters.
Ames Iowa State college students who complained about high electric charges won. The housing committee ruled approved rooming houses can charge eight cents a year for electric razors, five cents a month for electric clocks, and twenty three cents a month for a six tube radio. No extra charge for studying at night.
Iowa State College presents Ward Campuses a 10 cent program series featuring sound pictures from past seasons paired with vaudeville skits. The event targets the campus 'forgotten men' and non-dancing element, with more than 450 students attending the experimental venture.
Ames Iowa nine week program to address skilled labor shortage. Thirty five apprentices enrolled. open to indentured workers with six months experience. Program run by Iowa State College engineering extension service Master Builders association bricklayers union with Clay Products institute cooperation.
OsKaloosa W C Firebaugh a 42 year old New Sharon laborer was found dead beside the Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad tracks south of Lacey He was decapitated by a train and one arm was severed Hunters located the body After a 40 day sentence for disorderly conduct Firebaugh left Mahaska county jail with his dog Pup Pup returned to the jail alone
Rural youths 21 and older will attend four day programs on agriculture homemaking and personal adjustment starting Tuesday in Vinton Iowa City and Monroe. The courses inaugurate a series of 11 planned over four weeks by the Iowa State College extension service and local Rural Youth groups with additional meetings in seven towns later in January.
In Davenport an 82 year old woman, Mrs Rose Brennan, confronted a robber who followed her home after a bus ride. The assailant, about 40 with a tough look, demanded money, snatched a dime from a table, and fled, leaving her with bruised arms and a scratched face.
The Washington county health unit reports 356 births in 1939 with 48 percent in hospitals. Nurses attended 64 percent of home deliveries and 33 percent of all county deliveries, a marked improvement over 1937 and 1938. Thelma Luther helped deliver the county’s first New Year baby Lynn Jay Cochran of West Chester, marking a strong start to 1940 in maternity nursing.
Al Capone was released from Union Memorial hospital after more than a month of treatment for paresis and moved to a duplex at 708 Pamlico Road near the Pamlico race track in Baltimore. The transfer occurred shortly after dawn with only family and hospital officials aware of the destination until the trip was finished. John Capone later announced his brother had reached his new residence.
A former school building in Olds burned Sunday after 4 p m destroying the structure and its contents. The 22 room apartment house, owned by Leslie Morrison, was uninsured on personal effects though the structure was assessed at 12 000 and mortally damaged by the blaze that drew aid from nearby towns but failed to arrive in time due to distance and water shortages. Sixteen residents including Morrison and his mother occupied the building at the time and will rely on friends or relatives for shelter until repairs or new housing can be arranged.
Al Johnson of Tenold entered a 20 pound tub of Real Butter in a national cold storage contest in Minneapolis Minnesota. The tub was rated 95 when stored in June and scored 95 again five months later in November after removal from storage.
A quoted statement from Joan Capone says the current figure known as the Al Capone of today differs from recent years. The brother urged curiosity seekers to stay away, warning that the resemblance is not to be sensationalized.
Dr E T Peterson of the Iowa State University College of Education will headline a dedication program for the Lincoln and Stewart grade schools set for Tuesday evening at the high school starting 7 30. Open house at the Lincoln school runs 2 5 p m and 7 10 p m with students and civic figures attending with Supt BE Ralston presiding.
Troop F of the 113th Cavalry wrapped up a week of field training despite cold weather with average daily attendance of 56 and a full schedule of open-air activity and equipment inspections at the new armory. Visitors included Col. D. G. Richart and Lt. Col. Will J. Hyck as the unit stressed enhanced National Guard field skills. The week closed with a large meal featuring 80 pounds of turkey and accompaniments, marking a productive period for the unit under Captain O. J. Brown.
Republican leaders in the senate study the president's budget with critical eyes. The budget recommends reduced expenditures and increased taxes as part of fiscal plans discussed in the chamber.
The Brotherhood of the Presbyterian church will hold its regular monthly meeting this evening with attorney S. W. Livingston as speaker. A dinner is set for 6 30 followed by the meeting. Vernon Witting serves as president.
John R. Horak, 47, sustained chest injuries in an automobile accident Saturday near the Boyd Foster corner northwest of Washington. He was found unbreathing, but recovered to bruises and cuts with no broken bones. He is to be released today from Washington county hospital. Horak lives on a farm northeast of Washington.
The junior college play The Romantic Young Lady has been postponed due to an actor's illness. No new date is set. further announcements will follow. Directed by Ruth Wood, dramatics instructor at the high school and junior college.
The report notes excellent cooking by Scrubby Ewing and helpers for armory meals. The heating plant passed a severe test during last week's cold spell, according to Captain Brown, keeping the building warm on the coldest days. Guests for meals included members of the business men’s group assisting with armory dedication tickets, with several troopers contributing Saturday afternoon.
A Rock Island lines crew from Eldon Iowa to Rock Island Illinois honored Ed Sullivan who retired January 1 after about fifty one years in railroad service, twenty six as roadmaster at Washington. A purse was given for a trip and Sullivan reflected on loyal service amid railroad camaraderie.
City officers helped direct traffic in downtown as funeral processions for Orville Elder and KE D Sowash moved through the area. Both events drew families and observers as traffic was briefly halted to allow the processions to pass peacefully.
Helsinki reports the 44th division of the Russian army crushed on the central front near Suomussalmi. The victory described as the war’s biggest yields over 1,000 captured, 43 tanks, many guns and vast supplies including horses and automobiles. A special communique followed.
More than 1,000 Democrats will attend the third annual Jackson day dinner in Des Moines to start the election campaign. Henry A. Wallace secretary of agriculture will be present, aiding ticket sales among farmers. E. Hi Birmingham, state Democratic chairman, said over 200 farmers will be seated in a special group.
UPY Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace says opposition to reciprocal trade treaties is mostly vague fear. At the Iowa Jackson day dinner in Des Moines he notes cattle markets show parity and good prices. He urges careful farm policy after three years of good crops and warns against overfilling the granary.
