Police report a break in at Sportshop on the square in Washington with about $1,700 in cash from a money box and $7 to $8 from the till. A .38 caliber revolver and ammunition worth $85 were also taken. Entry believed through a back door. Another break-in reported at Claude Armbruster's rural home.
President Nixon nominates William B. Saxbe as the new attorney general promising to restore respect for the law. Saxbe calls himself a law and order man and warns that without respect the nation could drift toward anarchy while pledging to run the Justice Department to bring credit on the law. He stresses law and order to keep freedom from Big Brother interference in private life.
The Washington Community School District faces a 70 percent January gas allocation cut. Only 80 percent of normal gasoline needs will be filled in January. The district uses about 1,370 gallons weekly and 5,500 monthly. a 20 percent reduction could drop supplies by about 1,100 gallons. Extracurricular transportation may be cut first, possibly saving about 10 percent. The school board meets 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the senior high library.
DES MOINES UPI One of Gov. Robert D. Ray s energy advisers accused major oil firms of raising prices without evidence. Commerce Commission chair Maurice Van Nostrand urged federal action to probe whether the hikes are substantiated amid nationwide fuel cost gains and high margins.
A violent tremor rocked Lima early today causing widespread panic and at least two deaths. A man was struck by an automobile as he fled a shaking building and a child in Lurin, 15 miles north, was trampled by a crowd. Initial Lima damage was reported as slight.
President Nixon named James D. St Clair to lead defense for Watergate and possible impeachment. St Clair, 53, famed for Army McCarthy hearings, said he would recruit top talent for a large undertaking. He noted he would study all there is to know as work continues on the budget and State of the Union plans.
Barry Kern of Ottumwa about 20 was found unconscious this morning in a running car inside a closed car wash stall at Dick Ross Auto Service on North Marion Avenue. He was discovered by Stanley Skinner, reported to police, and taken to Washington County Hospital. Police noted a blood stain and broken watch, and调查 suggested he slipped, cut his chin, crawled back into the car, and was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.
Gov. Ray said he will listen to trucking industry views on longer heavier trucks to tackle fuel shortages. Despite opposing larger trucks on state highways, he fears bigger trucks could traffic state roads and drain gasoline. Industry groups argue longer 110 foot double bottom trucks boost efficiency and compensate for lower speed limits. Legislative action is expected when the 14 January session convenes.
Skylab 3 crew Gerald Carr Edward Gibson and William Pogue direct sun study instruments toward Comet Kohoutek in one of the final passes as the comet fades from Jupiter brightness to a dimmer star level. Astronomers warn brightness forecasts are tricky and the West sky may offer viewing if clear while a full moon hampers visibility.

Garner Hayfield superintendent Dr David Tiegland explains the change aims to spare students from dark commutes and the coldest part of the day.
