Washington city police seek clues to identify burglars who broke a window to enter the junior high school building last weekend. Only a few items missing including stereo tapes and a basketball.
More than 200 Southeast Iowa musicians gather at Washington Junior High School on Saturday January 12 to audition for the Southeast Iowa Honor Band Festival. The event, sponsored by the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association, features two select bands for junior high and high school students with rehearsals and a 7:30 p.m. concert set for January 26. Junior high band conductor is Gerry Olson of Westmar College LeMars and high school band conductor is Frank Piersol of the University of Iowa Iowa City.
The annual SomeSing Special program at the Washington YMCA is set for February 9. Program plans are being drafted and performers with acts to include should contact program director Kevin Koehn as soon as possible.
In Fort Madison 12 barbers of Union Local 287 announce reduced shop hours amid a so called hair cut crisis. Four of eight union shops will close on staggered schedules Mondays through Thursdays while others operate Mondays to Saturdays. Barbers will cut from a 50 hour week to 40 hours, with plan grounded in customer slowdown.

Daryl A. Richardson of Washington bound over to county grand jury for possible indictment on larceny in the night time after a break in at the Washington Golf and Country Club estimated at about $100. Magistrates also sentenced Lance F. Miller to four days in jail for driving with a suspended license.
Wayne Bowman of the Iowa State Employment Service along with Kirkwood Community College and the federal Manpower program invites unemployed and underemployed residents to explore two government funded training paths. Vocational schooling fees are paid with a 61 dollar weekly subsistence allowance, while on the job training reimburses half the trainee's salary. Programs cover office education and welding with up to thirty thousand dollars available locally and one hundred thousand for vocational schooling in neighboring counties. Eligibility targets veterans discharged after August 1964 and those meeting economic guidelines.
UPI reports that millions begin work and school in darkness on the first wintertime Daylight Saving Time. The change aims to save energy, with some schools shifting start times. global energy tensions include Japan’s yen devaluation and Sweden’s gasoline rationing.
Mr and Mrs Duane Luers of rural Keota and their son Lonnie aided Mrs Stanley Shemanski after her car slid into an ice covered creek northwest of Keota on January 2. The family freed the driver from waist deep water, applied first aid, warmed her, and she suffered no serious injuries.
Los Angeles area faced flood and landslide warnings as a new storm approached. About 300 residents in a two mile Topanga Canyon stretch were told to prepare for possible voluntary evacuation due to mudslide risk. Sixteen left for shelter at Malibu Civic Center, now an evacuation center. The system was roughly 250 miles southwest of LA and could drop an additional inch of rain in lowlands and up to three inches in mountains.
The Area Agency on Aging opened telephone information centers in eight Washington county towns to assist elderly residents. Volunteers provide free confidential help by phone between 9 a.m. and closing hours Monday through Friday, using new resource directories listing services such as counseling, medical care, nutrition, and legal aid. Local center contacts and numbers are listed for Ainsworth, Brighton, Crawfordsville, Kalona, Riverside, Washington, Wellman, and Westchester, with Margaret Tuttle coordinating the program.
Engineers begin plotting the route for a multi month storm sewer upgrade in Washington. Bud Buescher Co wins a 400000 plus contract to install 15 to 42 inch lines, with 19000 feet of pipe planned from Robison addition through East Madison Street and into downtown, to be completed next fall. Utilities watch for buried cables and service disruption.
In Tokyo the Bank of Japan let the yen fall to about 300 per U.S. dollar from 280, marking its third devaluation since the Arab oil boycott began. The move follows galloping inflation and an oil shortage tied to OAPEC’s October action. The yen had declined from 266 to 275 to 280 earlier in November before this new drop.
General Telephone's Iowa unit laments the Commerce Commission ruling that blocks a proposed 1.764 million dollar annual rate increase. Morgart says inflation since 1971 and rising costs justify higher rates and that many projects totaling about 10 million dollars yearly may be delayed due to reduced revenue.
Betty Ann Stockstell 22 of Ainsworth died from injuries after a two car crash two miles south of Fairfield on highway 1 early Sunday. She recently moved to Fairfield to live with a sister and was reared in Washington, daughter of Raymond and Marjorie Stockstell. Funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. Sherman-Eden Funeral Home with Rev. E Jasmann. burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Virgil Chandler 24 of Fairfield drove the other car. he was not seriously hurt. Passengers Shirley Cox 22 of Washington and Sheila Carroll of Washington were treated and released or transferred for injuries. Survivors include two brothers, Ronald and Timothy Stockstell. sisters Mary Bricker and Kathy Stockstell. maternal grandparents Ed and Mrs Dietrich.
