Mr and Mrs Michael Howard of 427 South Ninth Avenue Washington welcomed the 1974 New Year Baby at Washington County Hospital after arriving four days into the year. The newborn qualifies for merchant prizes from local ads to be published in the Evening Journal.
Callistus Kerns home suffered a Thursday night burglary. Police report $450 in cash three rings and a Browning automatic 12 gauge shotgun stolen. Marlin Ford, the new Washington police chief, residing upstairs, was away. Mrs Kern reported the break in at 9 25 pm after no earlier noise between 7 pm and the time of discovery. The burglar forced the back door and left the box containing the valuables untouched except for the gun.
The Highland Music Boosters Club will hold its January meeting next Wednesday January 9 in the Highland High School building. The Highland Junior High chorus will provide part of the program.
CAL Community School District will end classes at 3:30 p.m. and start at 9:00 a.m. in January and February to save fuel and avoid dark bus rides with Daylight Saving Time. Regular hours return March 1 for Coulter Alexander Latimer area schools.
In Dearborn Michigan Mayor Orville Hubbard pledges to shed seven pounds by January 15 and to penalize department heads who fail the weigh in. Weigh in at City Hall shows Hubbard, once 327 pounds, will suspend pay or remove those who fail to meet the target.
Iowa Governor Robert D. Ray proposes a 5.5 million dollar program to develop strip mining and coal research in Iowa by 1976. The plan includes a state owned experimental coal mine and desulfurization project to study ecological and soil impacts with Iowa Geological Survey and Iowa State University collaboration.
New construction in Washington rose to a possible 1973 record as 35 single family homes were added with a total value of 898,800, lifting year totals to 1,948,185. Commercial and institutional projects and 126 permits complemented growth despite rising material costs and loan rates.
The White House sought extending the deadline to end of day for turning over hundreds of documents and tapes to the Senate Watergate committee. Sam Dash said Nixon aides plan to refuse delivery of any tapes while signaling willingness to pare the request.
Iowa Public Employees Retirement System dispersed more than 16 million dollars to IPERS members and their beneficiaries in fiscal 1973. The IPERS trust fund rose by 12 percent from July 1, 1972, to June 1, 1973, as 16.4 million was paid to retired state workers, with retirement benefits increasing by 1.9 million over the prior year.
Dr. Philip Riggs of Drake University says Kohoutek is visible at twilight in the southwestern sky and should become brighter after Jan 10 as it moves closer to Venus and Jupiter. He notes the head will resemble a dirty snowball with a fuzzy appearance while the tail remains faint and best viewed in open country.
The Labor Department reports December unemployment at 4.9 per cent with 4.4 million jobless, reflecting a steady rise since May 1972. Economists warn energy shortages will push joblessness higher in 1974, especially among white collar workers and young women.
Kalona industrial leadership reports two new firms locating here to replace Chef Quik jobs. Turlock Pet Foods Inc from California will employ about 15 to 20 workers at the former Chef Quik plant and start production soon. Eden Enterprises builds a high protein poultry manure processing plant on South Sixth Street with around five staff. Kal-Wel Enterprises operates at Kalona Locker.
Larry Whetstine of Lime Creek Township elected chairman of the Washington County Extension Council for 1974 at the organization meeting. New officers include Dave Norman vice chairman Peter Bell treasurer and Mrs Gary Murphy secretary. Five new members begin two year terms: Floyd Richardson Eugene Steele Jim Hotchkiss Dave Sieren and Tom Yoder.
