Washington (UPI) Draft Director Lt Gen Hershey said the Selective Service may draft college students if Defense Department needs rise. Two methods include a deferment exam or colleges naming seniors near graduation. He noted colleges fear enrollment losses and exams favor science and math over liberal arts.
New York officials urged non essential workers to stay home as a three day subway and bus strike halted much of daily life. Mayor Lindsay led a hopeful crowd to avoid Manhattan congestion while police and transit leaders warned the crisis may worsen. Quill faced court as TWU negotiators pressed for a resolution and possible penalties.
Governor Harold A. Hughes backs training flights by Iowa Highway Commissioner Derby Thompson in the state plane as a good investment. Thompson, licensed to fly single engines, has logged about six hours to qualify for a twin engine license. Hughes said a co pilot is desirable on two engine flights and would support Thompson riding as co pilot.
EAST ALTON Illinois UPI gunpowder production lines resumed at the Olin Mathieson chemical plant after a 32 day strike by the International Association of Machinists ended. A spokesman said no immediate head count was taken though parking lots were full and enough workers were available to run the facility.
President Johnson returns to the White House and orders high level talks on world developments including a Viet Nam peace probe. He schedules a 12 15 p m EST conference with Vice President Humphrey and top officials as Goldberg reports on talks with Pope Paul VI and Vatican. Johnson vows continued efforts for Southeast Asia peace while monitoring Bethlehem Steel price hikes.
James Charles Wade 37 of Grandview died Sunday at University Hospital Iowa City from injuries after a calf event caused him to lose balance while riding in a pickup near Lockridge on Jan 1. Funeral Jan 5 at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction. Wade born Oct 7 1928 in Janesville Wisconsin. He married Shirley Ann Van Auken in 1949. He is survived by his wife, mother two sons and four daughters, two brothers and three sisters.
The Washington city council held its final meeting of the year at 10 a.m. New members took the oath at 11 a.m. and will meet with the outgoing council in the evening for the first full-scale 1966 session. Dale Fuhr and Phil Kneen finished duties. Harold Stephens and Paul Gebhardt replaced them. Wayne Davis was re-elected. Mayor Cloud Willits was sworn in for another term.
Mrs Amos Christner of Wayland died unexpectedly Sunday evening at University Hospital in Iowa City after being treated there since December 3 for a fractured leg from a fall at home. Former Mollie Farmer, she was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church. Survived by husband, one daughter Ruby Boots of Hopkinton, several grandchildren, brother Frank Farmer of Wayland, and three sisters Eva Fattig Cedar Rapids Elma Shaffer and Wilma Dutwiler Brighton vicinity. Funeral arrangements are pending at Zehr Funeral Home in Wayland.
U S paratroopers and Vietnamese and South Korean forces clash in the Mekong Delta near Saigon. The day long battle yields 111 Viet Cong killed, 160 more reported, plus 7 captured and 502 detained. Operations extend from Da Nang to the Cambodian border with Australian and New Zealand units aiding. The undeclared air truce continues.
About 115 members of Local 1293 of the IAMAW returned to work at Rockwell Standard Corp in Fairfield Iowa Sunday night after a four day wildcat strike. The walkouts began Wednesday night, with union officials pressing a return to work and a meeting set for Monday to discuss the arbitration ruling dispute.
A second blaze erupted Sunday in the ruins of Mount Pleasant Iowa First Presbyterian Church, damaged by a Thursday night fire. Fire Chief William Sater cited unknown cause and possible arson. little damage occurred due to extensive prior destruction.
United Press International reports the holiday period from Thursday evening to Sunday night produced at least 552 traffic fatalities nationwide. Ohio and California led with 46 deaths each, New York 44, Michigan 30, while Alaska, Idaho, Rhode Island and South Dakota saw no recorded fatalities.
Mrs. Joseph Pacha, 87, of 926 South Iowa Avenue, died Sunday January 2, 1966, at Washington County Hospital. Funeral is Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church with burial in East Pleasant Plain Cemetery. A prayer service is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Sherman Eden Funeral Home. Born November 29, 1878, in Johnson County, she married Joseph Pacha on September 19, 1916, and lived near Pleasant Plain before moving to Washington in 1951. Surviving are her husband, two sisters Anne Crowley Iowa City and Theresa Heick St. Louis, and a brother Timothy Crowley Jr. Iowa City.
Washington residents are reminded that the Jaycees will collect old Christmas trees this evening as a free community service. Place trees at the corner nearest your home. trucks will load and haul them to a safe burning site starting early this evening.
Obie Williams, 29, steadied 9 children leaping from a burning 80 unit apartment building. He caught four, failed to reach one, and shielded others as a man died and 16 were injured. The missed child, Clarence Downtown Jr., survived with family nearby. Williams later rode to the hospital as the group celebrated New Year’s Day.
Tuesday will be partly cloudy with little temperature change. Lows range from 15 to 20 in the north and 25 to 30 in the south, while highs Tuesday stay mostly in the 40s. The outlook for Wednesday is for little change in conditions and temperatures.
