United Press International reports the New Year holiday traffic fatalities reached 209 by 9 a.m. EST, halfway through the 78 hour period begun Thursday at 6 p.m. EST. The tally includes 209 traffic deaths, 12 fires, 6 plane incidents, and 19 miscellaneous fatalities, with a total of 246. The National Safety Council had predicted 360 to 440 traffic deaths for the weekend.
