Des Moines reports a severe winter storm brings snow and extreme cold across Iowa. Northwest counties see drifting snow, near zero to 15 below temps, with schools closed and delays in some flights and communications remain functional. The nationwide New Year toll tops 400 accidental deaths.
Mark Pratt reported finding fishing worms on the sidewalk in front of the municipal waterworks after a night of showers. Worms on the ground in mid winter are a rare omen for local fishermen.
Police and Broadlawns hospital report a flood of offers to adopt a baby boy found unclothed and abandoned behind a Des Moines apartment Sunday. The infant, under a week old and exposed, is in good condition at the hospital. Visitors rushed to see the child as investigators seek the mother, whose identity is unknown, and no adoption steps have begun.
Norma Irene Eyestone of Washington and Dean Melvin Seenbice of Sigourney obtained a marriage license Saturday in the office of R. R. Noonan, clerk of district court.
The dog Woo-Woo, longtime companion to the Griffith & Hedberg dairy truck, wandered away six months ago after being given to a farmer near Iowa City amid discipline concerns. He reportedly returned to Washington on foot, traveling about 30 miles guided by instinct.
Dr. John E. Simpson announces a $9000 donation from the Hoopeston Illinois congregation via the Chicago Presbytery for a connecting unit between the main building and Hebron hall at the United Presbyterian Home. An additional $1000 from the Steck family supports the project. the unit will include a sick bay office space and extra rooms. Joseph A. Park heads the Hoopeston congregation which will hold services in the church manse.
Francis Hiller, 19, of Washington, was arrested Saturday night for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and remanded by justice H. M. Putnam with bond set at 500 dollars. He could not post bond and remains in county jail awaiting grand jury action. Robert A. Nicholson of near Wyman was also arrested on the same charge and held on the same day, with expected 500 dollar bond.
Esther Gerdes and Lorene Booth left this morning for Greenville South Carolina to resume their college work.
Washington County Farm Bureau reports 69 new members since the county drive began, up 14 from last year’s pace. County field man Wayne Edmundson notes strong renewals totaling 615 and outlines township meetings and a renewal clean-up drive through February 10 to finish the campaign.
Mrs Gates, a Washington woman, starts as a local news reporter for the Journal, succeeding Mrs Merle Eckels who retired after years of service. Gates has led Washington women’s clubs and recently served as president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service at the Washington Methodist church. Eckels and husband plan a trip through the southern states later this month.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Beaty of Hast Moline Illinois welcomed the first New Year’s baby in the city. The infant was born at 10 45 a m January 1 joining twins Jim and Jo and Ruth Ann in the family.
Washington county cattle buyer Guy Cole recalls paying $6,000 down on 600 head of cattle to C. J. Brookhart of Lewistown Missouri who vanished after forging cattle mortgages and writing a cover check. Missouri and FBI agents search for Brookhart as Cole faces losses and legal action with Livingston Day lawyers.

Mrs. Fred Steck has returned home following a visit with her daughter in Des Moines.
Congress opens its second session amid pressure for tax cuts and a balanced budget. Republican leaders insist expenditures be trimmed and warn against any tax increases while the White House gears to propose a 43 billion dollar budget for the next year, with focus on fair deal programs and looming 1950 campaigns. Carla Guther and Joyce Montgomery return to school in Iowa City.
Washington county records show 121 marriage licenses in 1949 down from 160 in 1948 and 18 divorces versus 28 the previous year. Births rose to 520 in 1949 from 54 in 1948, per district court clerk R. R. Noonan.
County officials declined comment on a Cedar Rapids Gazette report that Bernard Dunn filed in Linn County District Court seeking repossession of 350 muskrat pelts valued at 4700 dollars. Dunn says the pelts sold to Cedar Rapids Hide and Fur Company last Thursday are among his stolen furs taken from his warehouse last week. Delaware is the second smallest state in the union.
About 15 500 United Mine Workers began a wildcat strike in Illinois and Indiana. Illinois miners were ordered to resume a three day work week January 9, while 2 000 to 3 000 Illinois members remained out. Indiana’s Viking mine near Terre Haute saw 300 strikers not covered by the order. John L. Lewis avoided comment as UMW workers elsewhere returned after a five day holiday.
Commander Ray Minick reminded Legionnaires that Leon Beaty post will hold its first meeting of the year tonight in the city hall Legion rooms.
Nem Caughran of Holley Grove Tennessee launches a bold three day clearance. He labels racks free and one dollar while stock from ten years past floods the village store. About 200 locals wait at the door as helpers multiply to manage the crowd. The top original price observed was twenty dollars for a ladies coat.
Tokyo dispatch reports the U S state department informs attaches that Formosa is not strategically valuable to deter Communist advances. The department aims to persuade the public that Formosa’s loss would not harm U S interests at home or abroad, despite content of a confidential document.
Lewis A. Warren, former Washington newspaperman and advertising manager for the Evening Journal, has completed the purchase of the Oelwein Daily Register Iowa, buying out partner W S Rupe. Warren now leads the Iowa Daily Press Association as president and is noted in Washington for his prior work and family connections.
Weather bulletin for Iowa reports snow in the northwest with sleet and freezing rain in the southeast. Colder conditions develop with strong northerly winds and gradually diminishing snow flurries. Tonight lows reach 19 below in the northwest to 5-2 above in the southeast. Wednesday highs near zero northwest to 10-15 above southeast.
