The ICC ordered railroads with 25 days or fewer coal supplies to reduce coal burning passenger service by 33 percent. The action, effective 1:59 p.m. January 8 for two months, cites insufficient soft coal production under the three day work week as enough to meet emergency needs.
A child health conference will be held at Riverside public school on Friday. Appointments can be made with Mrs. Vernon Masy in Riverside.
The first marriage license of the new year was issued Tuesday afternoon at the court house by R. R. Noonan, clerk of district court, to Samuel J. Schwartz and Susie J. Miller, both of Kalona.
Basil Vice his wife Dema and daughters Marsha Lynn aged two and Deborah Kay six months are new residents in Washington. Vice, formerly of Burlington, has become stock manager at Wittmers SAVE Food Store and the family has moved to West Tyler Street. He returns to groceries after a year as a wholesale salesman and earlier held roles at Benner Tea Co and North Burlington store. He is Wyaconda High School alumni and a four year Navy veteran.
The Washington county board of supervisors started 1950 by naming Robert S. Welte as chairman and Ned Morrow to a new three year term. They authorized paying routine claims without monthly board review and kept current deputy staffing in the treasurer clerk of court recorder deputy sheriff county superintendent of schools auditor offices. The Evening Journal Kalona News and Wellman Advance were named official newspapers, and the county continued its contract with the Washington County Medical Society.
County assessor Walt Kiesey outlines that blanks will be mailed for personal property listings and urges residents to obtain forms if not received. No assessors will visit homes this year. taxpayers must list items, with room for additions to real estate. Assistance is available at the assessor’s office and at designated locations on set dates.
Juke box operator J E Hut spotted a car with men who staged a fake murder. A man fired a toy pistol loaded with firecrackers, then the five Duke University students explained they were joking. State troopers confiscated the prop and warned the youths.
Harry Vern Davidson, 73, longtime Washington County resident, died suddenly at his home this morning after a weeklong cold. Funeral set for Friday at 2:30 pm at Sherman's Funeral Home with Dr. Fred E. Miller. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born July 16, 1877 in Lexington Illinois. married 1902 to Cora Elvira Cuddeback. Survivors include wife, daughter Mrs. R. R. Noonan of Washington, sister Mrs. Helen Hardman, two sons Harley and James, eight grandchildren. son Delbert preceded him in death.
American Legion Post votes to continue its Toys for Overseas drive this week urging children to drop gifts at the Legion hall. Past members discuss broader uniform purchases for funerals and celebrations, and plan events with state leaders visiting January 19. A dance is set for January 12 with Jimmy Dennis and his orchestra, while reports on the amateur show note interest despite limited finances.
Regular council meeting covered routine business as members approved a list of bills and renewed Joe Simmering beer permit while receiving an application for a similar permit from Lysle's Cafe.

Francis Hiller of Washington was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The case was moved Tuesday to Justice of the Peace E. D. Rayburn. Harold Boyd defended him and he was held over to the grand jury on a $100 bond.
Washington correspondent reports the death of Mrs. John H. Yount of Buda Illinois on December 26. Born May 15 1868 in Washington she was daughter of John R Nelson and Elizabeth Wylie. She lived here many years before moving to Illinois and married John H Yount January 1 1899. Services were held December 30 at Buda Congregational church.
President Truman calls for a new tax boost in his State of the Union address. The front page also notes a severe cold wave across Iowa with subzero temperatures, forecasts of light snow, and widespread travel disruptions as frigid air grips the Midwest and plains.
The Washington county chapter of the American Red Cross sent eighteen dozen cookies to Clinton Veterans Hospital for the January 2 holiday cookie jar. Mrs. Winnie Belter, executive secretary, announced the donation. Volunteers from the Red Cross prepared the treats.
Washington county automobile owners gain the option to buy plates by mail but current sales lag behind last year. Car licenses exceed 3,225 with about 200 fewer than January 4, 1949, while truck licenses reach 827 and trailers total 126 farm trailers 268.
Vernon Wittrig sells his share of the Wittrig and Wittmer Corner Market to Virgil Wittmer who remains sole owner. Wittmer states no immediate policy or name change. Basil Vice, formerly of Burlington, joins as stock manager.
Nine German men were arrested on manslaughter charges after a German girl riding in an American jeep was killed by a 10 pound stone near Nurnberg. Two other Germans in the jeep were seriously injured as violence followed an argument started in a tavern where the U S soldiers and their guest were taunted.
Chancellor Adenauer outlined a postwar program to provide living quarters for all, calling the war and Nazism a disaster. He cited 1,500,000 unemployed and linked job relief to foreign capital for reconstruction and housing, warning of a serious situation if early measures fail.
Mrs. Christine Amelia Shradel aged 91, longtime Riverside resident born in Czechoslovakia, died at her home at 4:15 AM after a lengthy illness. She is survived by two brothers Hans and Joe, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and had a son and daughter who predeceased her. Burial in Mt Olivet Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Wolfe to lead services. Burial arrangements pending.
J. W. Combs, route four chair of the Washington county CROP drive, reported this morning that contributions total $6,042.88. All but two townships, one township, and a donation of corn remain. The drive ends January 31.
President Truman urged Congress to revamp the tax system with a moderate increase in revenues. He outlined a large spending program and foresee a trillion dollar economy by 2000, while promising detailed budget proposals soon and possible repeal of wartime excises to spur retail sales.
Gus Alsip Washington County 4-H club agent spoke to the Y's Men at the YMCA on 4-H goals and organization. President Joe Arthur led a brief business session followed by a group photo for Richard McCleery to take on his club tour to Hawaii Australia and other Pacific regions.
Members of the reserve army ordnance unit will meet in the armory Thursday evening at 7 30 o clock. Capt. William Perdock today urged all members to plan to attend.

Highs near zero to five above. lows 1 to 20 below in the north and near 10 below in the south.
