Mrs. W. D. Lors, 66, hanged herself in her Iowa City basement after two months of health-related despondency. Survived by her husband and a son. her band is noted among mourners.
Fire destroyed the BE H Chilcote residence in Bedford with estimated losses of 7500 dollars. Only the first floor furnishings were saved. Insurance partly covers the loss. Antique furniture on the upper floor increased the total damage.
Waterloo Elks members distribute about three tons of food to Black Hawk county families. The program plans to aid 686 households with supplies allocated among needy families in the Waterloo area.
Cedar Rapids banker Van Vetch en Shaffer is named president of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce while A. L. Taylor is reelected executive secretary.
Rockford youth Lee Cunningham broke his arm again after a second fall on icy walks. He was unaware of the initial fracture until a physician discovered the prior break after the second fall.
Sioux City officials report Donald Brienzo Nielsen aged 94 and another man, 56, were arrested after Nebraska authorities found a $400 cache of stolen food and clothing near South Sioux City. They face charges of burglary at a Dix Mercantile Co. Store in Dix, Nebraska.
Atlantic reports attorney Ralph W. Cockshoot announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for congressman from Iowa’s seventh district. Incumbent Otha TV Wearin Hastings Democrat holds the seat. Cockshoot is a 1916 University of Iowa College of Law graduate, veteran of World War I, and has practiced law since 1919.
Ruth Perkins of Atlantic and Howard Parrott of Atlantic are held in Montgomery county jail after binding over to the grand jury on breaking and entering the Red Oak Wholesale Co. They allegedly stole about 200 dollars worth of sugar carried away in Perkins' car and trailer. Perkins bond set at 5000 dollars and Parrott at 3500 dollars. both have not posted. Robert Perkins, implicated, is still at large.
RED OAK Iowa baby girl born to Mrs Otha D Wearin of Hastings wife of the seventh district congressman. The daughter Mary Jane Wearin named in honor of Mr Wearin's mother. This is the Wearins first child.
Sioux City Dorothy Dahl, widow of Norman Dahl, sues Roy W. Butler and his Acme Sign Co. for 50000 after he fell sixty feet to his death November 10 while painting a sign on the Knapp and Spencer Hardware Co. building. She alleges Acme employed him and furnished the scaffold used in the setup.
Clayton Arnold of Lake Park named chairman and P. C. Goodell of Lake Park named secretary of a temporary organization to lead Dickinson county in completing pavement of primary highways. Pacts and cures on paving nine miles east of Spirit Lake to the Emmett area were presented by Representative W. A. Yager.

Born in Germany in 1863, she came to the United States in 1886 and married John Geerdes in 1887. The family moved to Washington County in 1910 and resided on the farm where she died. Surviving are her husband, four sons, three daughters, sixteen grandchildren, and one sister.
Firemen arrived yesterday evening to wet down a cob pile at the Phillips Fuel yard after sparks were seen flying from the pile. Authorities feared the embers could threaten nearby property.
Mrs. Melinda Elizabeth Sands widow of Samuel A. Sands died at 1 pm at her daughter’s home 602 North Town avenue after 15 years of illness. Funeral at 3 pm Monday led by Rev. William M. Nichol Jr of United Presbyterian Church. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born October 8, 1849 in Blount County Tennessee, she lived in Washington County most of her life and is survived by six children: Nettie Hazen Myrtle Grooma Clyde Sands Nora Davis Charles Clark and J I Sands with four daughters deceased.
Ek C. Clark a Davenport Iowa hotel operator was shot twice in the abdomen at a Branson Missouri dance hall after allegedly striking day marshal K L Grimstead when asked to leave. Clark was taken to a Springfield hospital where he was reported to have a poor chance to live.
Riverside man Whetstine was arrested by Sheriff H M Putnam on a forgery charge and jailed awaiting a hearing. He allegedly passed a forged check at Dautremont Produce House in Riverside last November.
Four marriage licenses issued in 1937 by the clerk of court, numbered 123, four short of the 1936 record of 127 and above the 1935 total of 100. The year ended with Harold J. McParland and Alice M. Banks, both of Washington, securing the last license.

In Burlington Iowa on January 1 authorities faced a possible murder mystery after timbermen reported a body on Huron Island, 24 miles north of Burlington in the Mississippi River. Ice breaking up forced the timbermen to leave before investigators could reach the scene. the man appeared to have been dead for months, possibly a year, with moving ice delaying further inquiry.
