Afton two bandits entered the GR Spencer home at Afton and threatened five family members with revolvers. The suspects escaped in the Spencers’ car with three wrist watches valued at 15 dollars.
Ottumwa police received a report of Everett McCoy an employee of Federal Engineering Co disappearing on New Year Eve. He allegedly drove away leaving his wife and two young children on a downtown corner Friday evening.
John Johnsen 70 remained in fairly good condition at a hospital in Council Bluffs after his clothing caught fire while lighting a cigar. The incident involved a cigar smoker known locally as the Lighting-up singer.
Jefferson reports Greene county hospital fully operational Sunday with first nurses on duty Saturday night surveying the building by day and welcoming 4500 visitors. At 2 am Sunday the first patient arrived and at 6 30 am the first baby was born.
Loss estimated at over 5000 dollars after a blaze destroyed the Fairport general store and postal station operated by Mrs. Carrie Hershey. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and contents, with investigations under way to determine the cause.

Two girls about 10 years old who fled the state soldiers and orphans home at Davenport were found and taken into custody by Sheriff VW M Putnam. They were returned to Davenport. One girl called Mamie and claimed to be from Ottumwa. another girl said she was Mamie’s sister Beulah but officials determined otherwise.

Corydon Iowa January 3 When caught attempting to steal gasoline Gordon Malm and D Wayne Montgomery confessed to the brutal killing of 82 year old Martin Pearson a recluse of Rockford Illinois Malm is a grandson of the murdered man.
Week of prayer services are set at the United Presbyterian church with daily evening programs except Saturday. Each 7:30 pm service features messages by Rev. W. M. Nichol Jr. The Wednesday talk at 8 pm will be by Roberti Haupt, a State University of Iowa student and son of Rev Christian Haupt. He will discuss India and its missions with an illustrated address.
Mrs J W Coon of Highland township died suddenly at her home in Haskins after years of heart leakage. She spoke with her sister by phone around eight, then lay down and was found by her husband. Funeral services will be held at Salem church three miles east of Haskins at 1 PM Tuesday.
Kalona residents Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Reiner welcomed a girl weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces born Saturday night January 1 at 11 05 PM at the county hospital with Dr J J L Fry of Kalona as attending physician. The birth tops the Hora baby for the year so far reported.
Mr and Mrs George Horn announce the birth of an eight pound baby girl or boy at 5 45 Sunday morning January 2 in Washington route three six miles northeast of here Dr Worley of Riverside attended The Journal notes many local firms plan gifts for the first New Year baby and its parents this year with a long list of prizes and a 56 birth announcements tally urged to report earlier births to the newspaper

Almost 1000 people attended the tenth annual open house at the Y M C A and Y W C A with bands, exhibits, and contests. Activities included pool demonstrations by Eastwood Patterson and Jinks, a municipal band concert directed by Milo Sorden, photo and stamp displays, and a juniors ping pong tournament won by Arlo Burham. Checker tournament results featured W J Alexander first and C E McAvoy second.
Mrs. Chris Dittmer of Washington was hit by a car driven by William Fry Kalona at the Marion avenue intersection near McDaniel's drug store. She appeared in shock and possibly concussion, with injuries not yet determined as the ambulance and doctor arrived.

Notable items include appeals from justice court against Keeshin Motor Express and driver William Tyrell over licensing issues. Numerous law cases list executors, administrators, savings banks, and various defendants across Stewart versus Brown, Hochstetler versus Ehrenfelt, and others.
The National Investors' congress promotes an adjustable wedding ring as the brainchild of Frederick Gaertner of Maplewood New Jersey. It claims to reduce mental strain on men recalling sizes and can be resized for men who marry more than once, keeping costs low.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously to uphold the New Deal program promoting public ownership of electric power plants using PWA loans and gifts to cities and towns. The decision found Alabama Power and Duke Power had no standing to challenge the loans and grants. The court also agreed to review the constitutionality of the Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935.
Washington news reports Wayne Simerman, former Washington resident, left Conklin Brothers to cofound May and Simerman, a new commission company. Ralph L. May and Frank A. Wolf join as partner and office manager. Simerman, son of Joe A. Simerman, farmed near Washington before moving to Chicago in 1925 after marrying Evelyn Eldridge. At the first meeting of the year the county board elected Fred Bauer as chairman. Ned Morrow of Wellman was sworn in as a new member replacing Boyd Foster whose term expired, as routine business filled the fore noon session.
James Madison McGuire 54 of Cotter died this morning after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Cotter Presbyterian Church with burial in Columbus City Cemetery. He was born January 17, 1883 in Washington County near Ainsworth and survived by wife Maude Edwards, a son Max, a daughter Mrs. William Hendrickson, five brothers and other relatives.
George Young began replastering at the Jay McNamara property on East Jefferson street after a fire damaged the home last November. Carpenters had recently installed a new roof over a large section of the structure.
President Roosevelt, before a joint session in Washington, sets forth new objectives for the deal, calls for business cooperation, and warns that a stronger defense is the price of peace. Warden Joseph E. B. Ragen announced a new device at the state prison to search cells. A portable photoelectric detector will be wheeled past cells starting Monday to detect concealed weapons in mattresses, triggering a bell if a contraband item is found.
