Des Moines Chief John R. Hattery said a full force of 100 state highway patrolmen would supervise New Year’s Eve traffic on Iowa highways. He urged over indulgers to avoid driving when celebrating and venturing onto the road.
Thomas McPartland, 19, suffered burns to hands and face when he ran into a blazing basement to rescue his mother after a gas explosion at the McPartland home. Mrs McPartland had fled to a corner to escape the flames.
Mrs. Josephine Rector of Manchester opened a 1934 Christmas greeting she had unopened for years and found a five dollar bill folded inside the envelope. The note had been mailed by her sister.
DES MOINES Iowa for six months the state tried to pay four men 116.82 owed for services at the Anamosa Reformatory. Checks issued July 6 to C R Fox J F Neason L Olson and L Parke for 42 15 17 26 4 51 and 58 90 respectively could not be located.
In Nashua Rev William Ment officiated a double wedding at the Little Brown Church in the Way. Otis Nelson of Stewartville Minnesota and Norma Nelson of Byron Minnesota wed James Nelson of Stewartville and Nora Johnson of Bryan. The bridegrooms are brothers and Norma is not related.
Miss Florence Loveland daughter of Mr and Mrs A J Loveland sustained a fractured skull in a coasting accident at Janesville. She was speeding down a hill and collided with Glenn Becker whose sled runner pierced her skull. She is a sophomore at Iowa State Teachers college Cedar Falls.
Donald Corcoran ten year old was struck and killed by Frank Winn's car as he walked up a hill with his two brothers in Oelwein. Brother John Corcoran was injured and hospitalized. Donald died on arrival at the hospital.
Leonard Thayer, ex trucker for the Sioux City Milk Producers, sues Julian and Ella Desimple for 10000 dollars claiming defaming remarks that he stole milk damaged his route and business and ruined his reputation in Sioux City.
Charles City reports that Thomas A. Strong chose his casket his tombstone epitaph and burial clothes and noted his two surviving daughters. He was found dead in his bed at the M. K. Lubben residence where he was staying.
Des Moines state superintendent Agnes Samuelson will retire from political life to become secretary of the Iowa State Cachers Association. She was chosen by the association’s executive board from a pool of 13 candidates. the post has been held for 20 years by Charles F. Pye, who is retiring.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam filed larceny charges against Sam Gregory 23 Merle Dawson 29 and Earl Campbell 31 all of Washington for stealing 118 turkeys from Charles Vincent at his farm on the southeast edge of town. The men confessed after being arrested early today and said they had been making weekly visits since late November loading two to three dozen turkeys each trip for transport to Rock Island.
After days of rain and fog, Washington sees sunshine and above normal temperatures. Street flusher cleans mud from pavements while ice and snow melt, revealing clearer streets though dirt roads remain muddy. Forecasters predict cooling tonight and Saturday with a low around 37 and a high near 50 earlier today.
Kraemer publisher of the Brighton Enterprise was appointed to the county hospital board by the county board of supervisors. He will serve until after next year’s election. He replaces Carlton Haven of Washington who leaves Washington next week for Pittsfield Illinois.
Eugene F P Flaherty manager of the Iowa Daily Press association which comprises 31 Iowa newspapers announced the purchase of the Cedar Falls Daily Record. He will assume active direction of the publication in January.

Bertie traveled to Keosauqua Iowa to supervise a tuberculosis clinic modeled on the county hospital program in Washington Nearly 75 residents were to be screened with x rays to detect possible TB There is no local x ray unit in Van Buren county and Dr Boice brought a portable machine for today’s clinic funded by Christmas seal receipts
Mrs John Geerdes, aged 79, died at 2 10 this afternoon at her home northeast of Washington after a long period of invalidism. The body was taken to A Jones funeral home where funeral plans are being made. She had been unable to leave her home for twelve years.
Iowa gasoline tax receipts for 1923 7 rose to 14 979 869 dollars the largest in history. Last year receipts were 13 695 875 dollars.
Milton Richardson and Byron Hopkins of Iowa City pleaded guilty to malicious mischief in district court. Judge Frank Beechly sentenced them to six months in county jail with four months suspended on payment of 75 dollars each to Highland township school district for the damage.

Two men, miles north of Haskins, after a disagreement with two Washington girls returning from a dance, allegedly attacked by breaking windows to prevent them from staying warm. They admitted drinking prior to the incident.
