Rain Spreads Across State with Freezing Risk

Weather by United Press International reports rain spreading eastward overnight and into Wednesday with a chance of freezing rain in extreme north and northwest. Northerly winds increase Wednesday with lows from the mid 20s in the northwest to near 40 in the southeast. Highs reach the mid 40s in the southeast early Wednesday as temperatures fall through the day in the central and northwest regions.

Washington planning panel backs city hall roof repairs and upper floor restoration

The Washington Planning and Zoning Commission approved a plan to repair the city hall roof and permit the Historical Society to restore the second and third floors of Blair House. The vote was 5 to 2, with objections raised over finances and impact on the city. The panel also considered a lease draft, a land acquisition offer, and subdivision plans while delaying rezoning actions and pledging to meet twice monthly during ongoing planning.

ASCS Office Faces Busy Period Over 1972 Feed Grain Signup

Washington County ASCS reports only 350 farms enrolled for the 1972 feed grain program as of Monday, far below the previous year’s 1206. Deadline is March 10, with Saturday hours added March 4 to handle expected surge. About half signed are in plan B restricting corn plantings.

Weaver shows top swine carcass at Washington County Hog Show

Dean Weaver's 197 pound barrow captured top carcass honors with 50.61 percent ham and loin cut. Other placings included Pat Frieberg 2nd with 50.41 percent, and Steve Settles 3rd, Jim McCreedy 4th, with 71 total entries across carcass and truck load classes.

Anderson enters race for Washington County Attorney

Kalona resident Tracy Anderson announced his candidacy at the county Democratic Convention for the office of Washington County Attorney. He plans to establish an accessible county office in the courthouse and travel to courts to prosecute state charges when needed, pledging full-time dedication and public availability. He is marrying and has two young sons Cary and Ja.
