Real estate taxes due with penalties details

Beginning today real estate and personal property taxes for 1972 can be paid at the county treasurer's office here. Taxpayers have from March 1 until June to pay their taxes without penalty. Special city assessments for streets and sewers are payable without penalty until April 1. Penalties are .75 per cent per month. Two men sought in West Burlington shooting at the Coral Tavern during an attempted robbery wounding 65 year old Robert Adolphson. Iowa Commission postpones Northwestern Bell rate hearing from March 6-10 to March 24-? at ICC Des Moines offices due to staff workload.

Monticello Man Killed in Anamosa Highway Head-On Crash

A 33 year old Monticello man Keith Lubbock died at the scene in a head-on collision with Larry Ottem 32 of Anamosa on U S 151 one mile north of Anamosa. Ottem was hospitalized with injuries. Lubbock's wife Carol Ann 33 and daughter LuAnn 11 were also injured and treated in fair condition.

Chamber Names Bill Whittenberg New Manager

Newly named Washington Chamber of Commerce Manager Bill Whittenberg began his duties today and outlined a mid March membership drive as the top priority. The 35 year old former St. Paul Park resident came for a local Albia restoration tour and will be joined by his wife Myrna and children after the school term ends.

Iowa Approves Mississippi River Bridge Takeovers

The Iowa Highway Commission voted 5-0 to take over the Clinton Mississippi River bridge and authorize bonds of 5.3 million to finish an unfurnished span. A Sabula Savanna bridge also approved for state takeover with a 450 thousand sale price financed by bonding and toll bridge authority.

Manslaughter Case Heads to Court in March

Robert Lee Farley faces a Monday jury trial in district court over a Oct 30 1971 traffic crash near Mt Pleasant that killed Dwight David Shahan. Washington approves emergency water rate hike for tower and mains

Iowa city council boosts water charges by about 45.5 percent to fund a new elevated tank and 12 inch mains after engineers deem the project an emergency. Bonds will be repaid from water revenues over 21 years with IRS and Wage-Price Board approval.

Nancy Vittetoe in Iowa Pork Queen Contest at Waterloo

Nancy Vittetoe competes in the State Pork Queen Contest during the Iowa Pork Producers Convention in Waterloo March 1–2. The judging at the Ramada Inn includes a five to ten minute pork promotion, questions, appearance, and poise. Vittetoe, a Iowa State University sophomore from Washington county, hails from Rural Route 1 and attends Vogue Butterick fashion board activities.

Iowa Senate stalls $28 million Vietnam bonus bill

The Iowa Senate Ways and Means Committee delayed action on a proposed $28 million Vietnam jar bonus fund for veterans. Lt. Gov. Roger Jepsen and Senate Minority Leader Clifton Lamborn pressed for quick passage, but financing details and eligible service dates remained under study as Gov. Ray floated a surtax option. About 74,000 Iowa servicemen could qualify, with a maximum $500 per veteran.

Albia Visit Sparks Albia Style Revival in Washington

A seven car caravan of Washington businessmen visited Albia on Tuesday to study Albia’s building restoration and its boost to retail trade. Included was Bill Whittenberg, new Washington chamber manager, with Jim Bash noting many wives joined the trip. Logan Cain outlined Albia’s project and Bash said Washington could form a nonprofit to hire an architect and maintenance contractor for a similar plan in spring.

FHA Members to Attend Iowa State Conference 1972

The 1972 Iowa Future Homemakers of America convention runs March 3–4 at Hotel Fort Des Moines Des Moines. Theme Decisions and You. Washington chapter delegates Roberta Davidson and Jane Blieu with advisor Miss Mary Atwood attend as ushers. Paul Devin will keynote. Louisa Liddell will conduct part of meeting. McCreedy Earns Top Pork Awards in Iowa Honors

Wilfred McCreedy of Ainsworth is one of 17 Iowa farmers honored by the Iowa Pork Producers Association in Waterloo for outstanding pork industry contributions. He was named a 1971 Master Swine Producer and Pork All-American, the sole recipient in district nine, with a 500 acre operation producing over 1000 hogs yearly. He will speak at the IPPA meeting and attend the national Pork Producers meeting in Kansas City March 21 23.

Draft registrants to use new forms

Mrs Louise Engel secretary of the local draft board says new Selective Service forms require registrants to list three nonfamily contacts with addresses who will know their address at all times. Previously only one contact was requested and remembered, so three may create more confusion.
