Washington firemen handle weekend blazes with no major damage
Firefighters responded Saturday to a pickup truck fire on old Highway 92 where a bale of hay burned but the vehicle remained undamaged. Sunday saw two calls as a trash container burned at Jack and Jill Food Store and later trash bins along Temple Corner on old Highway 92 caught fire. A separate weekend incident involved a field burn controlled by a farmer.

County budget hike approved by Washington County supervisors
The Washington County Board of Supervisors tentatively approved a 4.6 million dollar budget for 1977 78 with expenditures rising 22 percent and tax needs up 10 percent The plan calls for a public hearing March 8 at 9 a m in the courthouse office The proposal would push the levy to 2 79 per thousand for cities and 5 77 for rural areas while funding methods split 43 percent from property taxes 27 percent from state grants 10 percent from federal funds and the rest from fees and reimbursements Fiscal year spending would rise 839 283 and tax needs 157 836 over the current 3 8 million budget Multiple factors drive the increase including higher salaries retirement benefits TB eradication library levies tort liability insurance mental health and other services road maintenance and planned improvements A federal revenue sharing package of 311 000 would fund projects including 150 000 for secondary roads and 50 000 seed money for a County Developmental CAP Center Details are available from the county auditor.

Enrollments Fall Hit Iowa Schools Hard
Iowa's 1977-78 DPI census projects a 14 percent drop in K-12 students by 1982-83, about 87,000 fewer pupils and $121 million less in state funds. Lawmakers warn of consolidation and reform as rural districts burdened, with only Carroll and Sioux counties showing small enrollment gains. Senator Willits says sustaining viable programs will be very difficult with current funding.
