Drop plan for agency merger in Iowa

County sales tax bill clears first hurdle in Iowa

A proposal to let counties impose a 1 percent local option sales tax won initial approval from a House subcommittee and will move to the House Cities Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. Kalona attorney pleads guilty in eight tax evasion counts

Lawrence B. Griffiths a 42 year old Kalona attorney pleads guilty to eight state income tax evasion indictments. Judge Ira F Morrison imposes a total fine of 4000 dollars. Griffiths has paid back taxes and penalties totaling about 4800 and 1200 respectively. Possible suspension or disbarment of his Iowa law license remains possible under Iowa Supreme Court authority. Other district court actions involve Ralph C. Sistern Raymond D. Cline Mark Stratton Dwight Snow and Paul Smith with various sentences and pleas. Weather mostly cloudy with snow late in the day then clearing Sunday with highs in the mid 30s.

Eastern floods drive evacuations as West sees drought relief

Flooding along Cowanesque Creek in Pennsylvania forced the Lawrenceville Fire Department to abandon its HQ and evacuated about 200 residents while a 15 foot ice wall disrupted a Sinnemahoning bridge. Police helicopters tracked an eight mile long ice stretch toward the Susquehanna. Sunset Bay New York and Lodi New Jersey faced widespread evacuations from Creek and Saddle River floods. Meanwhile Colorado’s Easter snows revived ski season as Vail reported fresh 15-20 inches of snow.
