Thieves forced entry at the Lester Merz residence on West Second Street between 6:30 and 11 p.m. Monday. They took a C B radio, an automatic rifle, a movie projector, a Pentax 33mm camera, plus $8 in cash and $250 in travelers checks.
A 12 member jury was sworn today in Washington County District Court for the drunk driving case of Kenneth James Embree 42 of Washington. Arrested Nov 6 1976 by Officer Gary Franzen at East Seventh St North 12th Ave intersection. Prosecution by Gerald Denning defense Earl Wright. Judge Ira F Morrison presiding. Jury dismissed until Wednesday with trial expected to last one day.
Charles Pixler of Omaha pleaded guilty in District Court to conspiracy to commit a felony in Marshalltown. Sentencing tentatively set for April 1. Webster County Attorney says conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated burglary charges will be dropped. Trial dates noted for other charges in Marshalltown and Mason City.
The Iowa Senate approved an amended House resolution disapproving the conservation commission marina project at Gull Point State Park on West Okoboji Lake by a 26-17 vote after residents in the Iowa Great Lakes region voiced unanimous opposition. The chamber also moved to require quarterly income tax returns for Iowa corporations and a $100 license for out-of-state residents to hunt raccoons in Iowa.
Mrs. Norma Whitham chairs the annual Washington County Red Cross Fund Drive running through March with a $11,976 goal. Kalona United Fund has already sent $650 and the Community Chest of Washington will contribute the city’s share. The drive funds first aid training, military family and veteran services, water safety and swim lessons, parenting classes, an essay contest, and nursing home, hospital, and Veterans Hospital volunteer work. County and township directors from multiple towns coordinate the effort.
President Carter urged Congress to form a cabinet level energy department to unify fragmented policy across 50 federal agencies. The plan would abolish three agencies, move duties from about 20 others, keep health and safety regulation independent, and retain Interior leasing, EPA, and coal mine programs. Budget near 10.6 billion and about 19,767 workers would transfer from existing agencies.
