Iowa Weather: Cloudy, colder tonight with light snow flurries

United Press International reports Iowa will be cloudy and colder tonight with a chance of snow flurries in the east and north central areas. Saturday will be partly cloudy and warmer with lows in the teens to mid 20s and highs in the 30s. The Sunday outlook calls for increasing cloudiness and a bit warmer conditions.

Mike Rich Killed by Train in Washington County

Washington County CAP advisory committee reports bank and club contributions to a projected summer youth employment program in honor of Robert Mike Rich, a Washington High School senior and 4 H leader who died when his car was struck by a freight train near the Leet Locker Plant. Funeral plans are pending and Jones Funeral Home is in charge. Rich, born January 18, 1951, was a wrestler and treasurer of the Future Business Leaders of America. he is survived by his parents, siblings, and grandparents. Officials note rising support from Kiwanis Rotary and BPW clubs as the county seeks funds to run a two-youth program matching local youths with jobs.

Long Term Care Unit Opens In Old Washington County Hospital

Washington County hospital officials report progress in using the old Washington County Hospital building as a long term care unit. Since January 15 patients have been moved from the new hospital to the refurbished old building, freeing beds in the main facility. Patients are admitted by physicians and receive services from connected labs X ray and therapy departments with 24 hour nursing. Admission information available from Norman E. Snowstorm Closes Iowa Highways With Heavy Snow

A southeast moving storm dumped up to 10 inches more snow across western and central Iowa, with totals from Des Moines to Sioux City around 42 inches in places. Motorists faced stalled semis on I 80 near Grinnell, U S 20 closures between Fort Dodge and Webster City, and bans on several routes as blowing snow reduced visibility. Southeast Iowa expected 2 to 4 inches more by tonight while the northeast escaped the new snowfall.

Apollo 9 Crew Colds Improve Ahead of Launch

Doctors reported Apollo 9 astronauts McDivitt Scott and Schweickart showing improvement from colds that postponed their 10 day orbital test flight. They resumed light exercise and spacecraft training as officials moved launch to Monday at 11 a.m. EST to aid recovery.
