UPI reports Apollo 9 astronauts McDivitt Scott and Schweickart postponed from Friday 11 am EST to Monday after sore throats and nasal congestion. Chief physician Berry says crewmembers improved since yesterday but the busy first five days prompted delay to protect performance. The crew is disappointed but understands.
The Iowa House passed, 83 to 38, a bill to repeal the two year old sales tax credits law. It moves to Gov. Ray who favors repeal though credits had benefited some low and middle income Iowans. The measure caps spring credits at 3000 and ends credits afterward, with about 5.5 million expected this spring.
DES MOINES UPI The Iowa Senate refused to reconsider a bill to liberalize abortions that had been defeated last week. A motion by Sen. Jim Griffin to revive the measure failed 28 to 30 despite talk of watering down amendments. Sen. Alden Erskine said the chamber has spent too much time on the bill.
President Nixon flew to Rome to meet Italian leaders while thousands of Rome students clashed with police, hurling rocks and debris as authorities sprayed crowds with dye. In Berlin Nixon addressed 8,000 workers, pledging Western resolve against Soviet pressure and urging freedom for Berlin, joined by West German leaders.
Eastern Iowa farmers who hire migrant workers testified at a Des Moines hearing on a bill making farmers responsible for determining migrant child ages before work. They argued enforcement would be difficult, cited wages of 1.25 per hour plus piece rates, and criticized committee understanding while defending housing provisions and worker discipline.
