An all male jury in New Orleans found Clay L Shaw not guilty of conspiring to murder John F Kennedy, delivering a unanimous first ballot acquittal on the second anniversary of his arrest. Jurors said the single ballot was enough, as Shaw appeared stunned but relieved after the verdict was read at 2 02 a m EST. Shaw, former managing director of the New Orleans International Trade Mart, was escorted from court amid applause and security. The verdict ends a two year case brought by District Attorney Jim Garrison accusing Shaw of colluding with Lee Harvey Oswald and David Ferrie to kill Kennedy.
The Iowa Senate passed enabling legislation to allow state tuition grants for private college students 40 to 12 after six hours of debate. The bill, backed by Gov. Ray and the private college association, now goes to the House and does not provide funding. It includes amendments expanding aid to graduate students and to certain nonaccredited schools, and ties aid to financial need with a student contribution.
