The United States treasury ruled that state liquor profits are exempt from federal income tax. Iowa’s liquor system will save about $75,000 in the first six months from July to December 1934, with an annual saving around $200,000 according to commission officials.
Francis Buckley 25 head chemist killed in an explosion at the Iowa Soap Co laboratory in Burlington. Dorothy Bloom 20, a laboratory assistant, suffered facial burns while aiding Buckley. Investigators say Buckley was conducting tests when fumes triggered the blast.
Des Moines February 28. County Attorney King Thompson of Linn county testified at the liquor control investigation committee about the seal incident and the 200 state liquor seals sent to Cedar Rapids. Testimony also covered agreements with National Cash Register for 100 registers for liquor stores. Rep Alesch and Rep Moore to appear later as the panel examines warrants and gasoline tax refunds delaying the session.
