The Iowa Industrial and Defense Commission convened in Governor Wilson's office for the first time since its creation. It secured a $5,000 appropriation from the legislative control group to carry on activities until additional funds are available, said Chairman Ed A. Kimball.
OTTUMWA Martin Miller of Batavia and Frank Stever of Fairfield appeared before U S Commissioner Herman J Schaefer charged with using the mails to defraud in a southeast Iowa cattle ring scheme. About 20 men from Fairfield Keosauqua and nearby areas are indicted on similar charges and several cases have been disposed of. Stever and Miller waived to the federal grand jury and were released on 1000 dollar bonds each. They were recently indicted in West Virginia.
Des Moines report says W. D. Craft from Linden carried a heavy burlap bag into a Panora dealer to pay for a new car. He handed over 8497 silver dollars, a hobby from travels in Mexico where locals distrust paper money and prefer coinage.
Des Moines Iowa the Senate sent to Governor Wilson a house bill renewing the one cent a pound butterfat tax for two years and approved ten appropriations totaling about 16 million dollars annually The butterfat tax remains like the 1939 1940 law with two changes dates shifted from May 1 to May 15 and from June 1 to June 15 and enforcement moved to the attorney general from county attorneys.
Mrs Nina Johnson about 70 is in serious condition at University hospital with burns after a fire at a relative's home in Iowa City. The bedridden woman, with a small child, alerted helpers and neighbors Lawrence Carlson and Samuel Hunter lifted her through a broken window to safety.
Marshalltown report says Fire Chief C. C. Pigman charged H. F. Hemphill with negligence for a December 13 fire at St. Mary’s parochial school after Hemphill, demoted February 12 from assistant fire chief, failed to deploy sufficient personnel and equipment. Hemphill has appealed the demotion and a civil service hearing is set within 20 days.
An application signed by Don ald Leon Beenblossom seeks a court order to change his name to Donald Leon Palmer Benblossom. He states he has been known as Donald Palmer Benblossom for years and requests the change to be official after a 30 day filing period.
A seven died and nine were hurt when an Eastern Airlines sleeper plane crashed in a pine grove 15 miles south of Atlanta during bad weather. Captain Eddie Rickenbacker was critically injured with a broken leg and other injuries. Representative Byron of Maryland was among the identified dead.

Ernest Knotek 55, a Wash ington State bank director since its 1982 opening, died at Washington county hospital after a stroke and declining health. Funeral services set for Saturday at L A Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He leaves his mother, five sisters, and three brothers.
Fourteen Sunday schools were represented at the Washington county Institute of Christian education held in the First Presbyterian church. The event featured leaders including C. V. Brown and Rev. Sioux City, Iowa, February 27. Arthur Levering, 49, and Violet B. Harris, 21, mother of the five year old killed for refusing to eat, pleaded guilty to second degree murder before Judge A. O. Wakefield. Levering received a life term at Ft. Madison penitentiary while Harris got 25 years at Rockwell City reformatory.

Robert Adams finished a thirty day sentence in the county jail on a bad check charge. Sheriff H. M. Putnam took him to Riverside for arraignment before Justice of the Peace M. P. Rowe on another similar count. The Riverside justice did not finalize sentencing pending potential repayment of the bad check.
Washington attorneys notified that the Iowa supreme court reversed the Washington county district court ruling in Henry F. and Clara Prymek v Washington county. The case, involving damages over a road closure, is remanded for trial with the jury to decide. The supreme court found the issue should have been jury submitted rather than decided on law. The March 1940 term marked the prior judge’s ruling in favor of the county.
Lawrence Huffstuttler, once released from Eldora State Training School for Boys over a year ago, faced new theft accusations involving chickens from Bill Custer. His parole was revoked after the charge was investigated, and a state parole agent escorted him back to Eldora to serve the remaining term.
