Charles F. Martin the Jackson county superintendent of schools, 51, of Maquoketa, escaped injury when a wreck on icy roads two miles north of Manchester delayed his scheduled address to Fayette schoolmen. He hitchhiked back, telephoned Maquoketa for a wrecker, and rode on to Fayette.
More than 3,000 Bethlehem Steel workers in Lackawanna vote to accept a three point settlement and return to work after Union hall speech by Van A. Bittner. The company will meet with the union, and a national labor relations board election is planned within thirty days.
The University of Iowa will honor its athlete of the year this week as students faculty and townspeople vote. Trophy presentation occurs between halves of the Minnesota Iowa basketball game Monday night with leading football contenders Captain Mike Nich Captain-elect Bill Diehl Bill Green Ken Pettit Ross Anderson Francis Curran.
Iowa defense commission chairman Ipiward A. Kimball announced Rodney Q. Selby 41 as commission secretary. Selby will spend most of his time in Washington and will receive 3500 dollars a year with a likely departure for Washington in a week or ten days.
At Mason City a parade honoring 260 guardsmen before departure to Louisiana ended with Albert Stanard a 64 year old veteran and pallbearer collapsing at the railroad station. He died soon after at a hospital from a heart attack suffered in near zero cold. Stanard worked for People's Gas and Electric Co. He leaves a wife a son and a daughter.
A district court jury acquitted Maurice Mayberry former Mills county treasurer of defrauding the county of 1794.48 The county sought recovery from Mayberry or his bonding company alleging a December 1938 shortage Mayberry claimed the treasurer's office was robbed that morning and he was locked in the vault by two masked robbers
Des Moines reports Clyde Wood aged 42 a construction worker employed by an Ames firm suffered a spinal dislocation and paralysis after a second accident on the same road within a mile west of Commerce He had worked long hours and is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel near Commerce Iowa.
Mrs. Violet Harris 21 wept at her slain son's grave in Sioux City and prepared for removal to Rockwell City reformatory for a 25 year term after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the fatal beating of Gordon Harris 5 by Arthur Levering 40. She asked County Attorney Maurice B. Rawlings for permission to attend her son's funeral.
Six in the running for three three year terms and one for the remaining one year term in Washington school board elections. Incumbents Harry W Ramseyer and Dr W D Dwyer seek re election alongside Robert Arthur Clarence Logan and Mrs A E Baldrige for the three year terms. B F Bostwick Jr is the sole candidate for the short term with S G Kiesey withdrawing. Names to appear on the official ballot or via write ins.
Seven federal aviation experts examine the twisted wreckage near Atlanta after a crash of an eastern airline sleeper. Seven people were killed yesterday while nine survived. three including Captain Eddie Rickenbacker remain in serious condition.
A bass viol player was killed and two orchestra members were injured when their station wagon crashed into the rear of a truck on the Worcester turnpike near Westboro Mississippi.
Des Moines reports Governor George A. Wilson signed seven bills, one granting him authority to establish a home guard while the National Guard remains in active federal service. The move expands state security options during federal mobilization.
Gene Tucker and Gerald Carris received orders from the Air Corps to report on March 19 at the Corsicana Texas training detachment. They will become flying cadets at the civil flying training school under army supervision.
The Washington County selective service board sent out 50 more questionnaires to registrants from last October, bringing total recipients to 350. Recipients must answer and return within five days to aid future classifications.

Dr William F Rotzler of Pittsburgh associate secretary of the United Presbyterian board of American missions will speak at the Washington United Presbyterian Church in an informal 6 30 p m gathering and at the 8 00 p m service He tours thirty area churches reaching Iowa synods to discuss missions coming from Keokuk for the Washington event He is hosted by Rev George Kerr pastor of the Washington church and the tour covers Sabbath evening services across the region
Davenport Iowa February 28 two news photographers narrowly escaped death on a railway viaduct as a Rock Island freight train passed. Lamonie Mark of the Davenport Democrat was seriously injured while Weldon Whisler of the Davenport Times escaped with bruises after clinging to the side rail during the convoy of the 185th field artillery bound for Camp Claiborne Louisiana.
Willis A. Sutter, superintendent of Atlanta public schools, will deliver the commencement address for the high school and junior college exercises. Supt. E. A. Ralston arranged the invitation during a five day American Association of School Administrators convention in Atlantic City. The event drew 12 000 to 15 000 educators under the theme Schools and Democracy. Governor Harold Stassen and U S Education Commissioner J W Studebaker were among speakers.
Ruth E. Jackson versus Frank Kallaus dismissed as fully disposed by settlement. Eva May Blackman sues for divorce from Harold J. Blackman filed with custody sought for their minor child. George F. Morrison represents. Judge J G Patterson attends January term. March term to begin in Washington in a week.

King Alfonso XIII of Spain died in Rome at 11 50 a m in his Grand Hotel suite surrounded by family doctors and priests. He had suffered heart attacks for two weeks as his lifelong delicate health declined. doctors cited a peaceful death.
American consulates in Naples and Palermo Sicily were shut today at the request of the Italian government. The move affects U S diplomatic offices in southern Italy amid rising tensions.
