The college will graduate 13 students in June and seeks new funds to carry on. More than 30 of 40 students pay tuition and board from NYA employment checks. NYA project renewal application could provide $500 monthly if granted. No successor yet for President Clark W. Howard who resigned February 10.
Water in the Iowa river will back up several miles after a new 200 foot dam costing 7500 dollars is put in operation here. Sponsored by the state conservation commission the dam built by Weldon Brothers aims to improve fishing in the region.
Violet B Harris a 21 year old and Arthur F Levering 40 are jailed in Sioux City as investigators examine the death of Gordon G Harris. The death certificate cites brain hemorrhage under unusual circumstances with numerous bruises. Deputy Coroner Paul Osincup notes bruises and says the mortuary supplied details. no record of the father.
Purdue University officials announced that David L L Arm an associate professor of mechanical engineering has resigned to become professor of mechanical engineering at Iowa State College in Ames He has served seven years on the Purdue faculty at Lafayette Ind and has been acting personnel director since July 1 1940.
Bobby Martin, 27, of Davenport defeats 18 year old Bobby Kennedy of Cedar Rapids to retain the state checker championship. The win marks the seventh consecutive title for Martin after a two and a half hour match that included three drawn games.
The new Rockwood's for women in the former Smart & Thrifty building on the east square opens tomorrow evening from 7 30 to 9 30. Mr and Mrs Harry Rimmmernan of Fairfield own and operate it. The event is an informal open house with music refreshments and souvenir favors for women. The Rockwood's shoe shop operated by M K Rapp and Mrs Rapp associates in the same building will also offer hosiery and handbags.
The Mardi Gras at City Hall staged by the B and P W club drew several hundred attendees. Booths offered bingo prizes and fortune telling, with a floor show featuring Wendell Baker and local performers including the Hennon Steele Humble trio and baton twirler Rita Peck.
A decree of divorce was filed yesterday in the district court clerk’s office in the case of Nita Winters versus David Winters. Judge J. G. Patterson granted the divorce on January 30, and it became effective upon filing this week.
Washington, Feb 26 UP Farmers earned $633 million from crops and animals in January up $46 million from a year earlier. The rise is attributed mainly to higher livestock prices, with livestock sales totaling $434 million for the month.
Wellman Feb 26 Jesse Ponchard died at his Daytonville home after a paralytic stroke suffered four weeks earlier. Funeral services will be Friday at two o clock at his daughter Mrs Clarence Wittings home in Wellman with interment at Piersol Cemetery in Green Valley northwest of Wellman. He was born January 1 1863 in Southampton England and came to the U.S. with his parents as a child. He married Lillie Margaret Long in 1888 and is survived by his wife and four daughters Mrs Clarence Witting Mrs William Rickey Mrs Lindley Reddick and Mrs Murray Hall of North English.
The World Day of Prayer will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o clock in the Christian church. All church groups and the community are invited to attend this union meeting with the theme Thy Kingdom Come. The organizing committee includes Mrs B Holden and Mrs Andrew Larson. The program features hymns prayers readings talks and a benediction led by Rev Claude Breidenthal and others.
F E Schmitt announced a Chamber meeting tomorrow at 6 30 pm at the Y M C A with dinner and talks on the airport. Speakers include Jack Snodgrass airport director and Kenneth Kimberlin junior college coach who trained as a pilot. President Walter Rukgaber will preside.
United Press reports Italy's African empire crumbling under British blows. South African troops advance along the Indian Ocean coast of Italian Somaliland capturing Mogadishu and 3,000 prisoners as British forces bomb the Somaliland front and destroy Italian supplies. A rumor claims German troops may move into Bulgaria, unconfirmed by others.
An eight o'clock incident reports a team of horses hitched to a hay wagon running out of control down Marion avenue toward the square. The runaway drew attention as it sped along the west side, breaking the speed limit and causing a notable scare in the morning.
County Auditor S G Kiesey announced his withdrawal from the Washington board of education race to focus on county duties. His exit leaves the northeast section without a candidate for the one year term, leaving B F Bostwick Jr the sole candidate to fill the unexpired term of D J Barhes. No new filings reported. nomination papers due by Feb 28. Voters will choose two from W D Dwyer Harry Ramseyer R Arthur Mrs A E Baldrige Clarence Logan for the two full three year terms.
Secretary Schmitt urged all business men to attend the upcoming session, stressing that reports will be received and the gathering will be an important event for the local business community.
Mrs Ina Brinton sues Washington County Hospital Board demanding a writ of mandamus to establish the Frank and Ina Brinton Relief Fund with 1500 dollars paid by the plaintiff. The fund, created by a 1926 trust, would use income to aid poor women in childbirth. The case, filed for the March term, names board members Floyd Letts F Kraemer Carl Jungbluth Edith Gates Walter Brown and Mrs Howard Richardson and is handled by Crissman and Bleakley of Cedar Rapids.
About one third of the roof burned in a fire yesterday at 514 West Main Street. The blaze likely started from a chimney spark with estimated loss around 200 dollars. The building, remodeled into apartments by Ivan Norton, housed Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Shaffer. Insurance covers the loss and repairs will begin within days with tarpaulins in place for temporary protection.

Senator Gerald Nye charged in the Senate that Britain is waging a financial sitdown strike to win free war aid under the British aid bill. He argued during the ninth day of debate that heavy British taxes sparked the American Revolution and asked what H R 1776 will inspire.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a 1.533 billion dollar bill funding the Army cantonment program and Navy bases abroad. General George C. Marshall testified the Army is better equipped to defend the nation than a year ago, warning of a helpless situation if the Atlantic were caped by enemies. The bill moved to the House floor for debate, with passage expected tomorrow.
Des Moines February 26 Up Iowa house committee on animal industry introduced a bill to curb theft by requiring all truckers hauling livestock to issue bills of lading signed by the stock owner.
Ronald Jennings of Moulton has purchased the Morgan cafe and will open as the Washington Cafe with a public open house Saturday. The new owner plans redecorating and cleaning, will use the slogan The Cleanest Cafe in Iowa, and his father James R. Jennings will join with Mrs. Jennings later this week. The couple will reside above the former Morgans’ apartment.
The United Auto Workers announced it would file notice of intention to strike at Ford Motor Company's River Rouge Lincoln and Highland Park plants. A telegram explaining the decision was sent to President Roosevelt after an all morning conference between UAW president R. J. Thomas and Ford organizer Michael F. Winman Jr.
A large portion of clover and meadow seedings in Wapello county were killed by quick thaws and freezes. Wheat suffered little damage, as it is less susceptible to heaving.
