A rural Iowa column notes the death of Verl Glad elder, 37, a Centerville farmer who died of a heart attack while chores, unmarried and living with his father. In Cedar Rapids, Dr. B L Knight Linn county coroner urged ending driver hand signals, arguing both hands should stay on the wheel.
District Judge P J Siegers directed a verdict for Oska loosa city in a $15,000 suit by Mrs Lillian Russell who claimed injuries from a fall on an icy sidewalk a year earlier.
C F Larson, Fort Dodge contractor, said Monday he will build from 25 to 40 houses this year as soon as weather allows. The homes will be moved to a 4,099 to 5,000 dollar range depending on features.
Frederick E. Quire, 234 ar-ond senior at the University of Iowa, died from a gunshot in his Mon coroner's jury ruled after an inquest led by Warren county coroner Dr J O s rth. He was found wounded in an upstairs bed by his mother upon returning from shopping.
Sioux City charges of kidnapping for ransom were filed against Ralph Fouts, Ralph Johnson, and Charles Cunningham, officers of the truckers union. They allegedly kidnapped three Havelock truckers. County Attorney Maurice E. Rawlings filed the information. Bail is not available due to the death penalty. The trio is jailed awaiting grand jury action next week.
Workers for the Toledo, Peoria & Western halted Farmers Grain & Supply Co. efforts to ship grain by boat from Warsaw Illinois across the Mississippi. After a year of clashes and armed guards the company built towers to move grain to the river. The railroad then secured a derrick and cut steel extending over its right of way.
Davenport police say Howard Sallows 32 a guard at Marshall Field Co store was extradited to Chicago to face charges of complicity in the $18000 hold up he denied any involvement beyond being the guard flagged by the bandit and said he would have money if he had helped.
Sumner Welles, Roosevelt's envoy, plans a night in Switzerland en route to Berlin and will meet Hitler and Mussolini again after crossing Switzerland. He claims a Roosevelt letter to Mussolini was only a greeting and cites health concerns and talks with American Minister Leland Harrison as why he pauses in Switzerland.
Senator D Worth Clark of Idaho asked President Roosevelt to state his 1940 political intention for the sake of the party and fair play. Senators Clyde L Herring of Iowa and Sherman Minton of Indiana urged silence to avoid intra party rancor as Roosevelt neared Washington from a fishing cruise.
Commanding officer Marshal Feyzi Cakmak leads a rapidly expanding Turkish army as Near East tensions rise. Turkey holds a pivotal role in forthcoming spring activities and regional developments.
Lincoln attorney Lee Rankin filed a petition with 2369 signatures to place Thomas B. Dewey on the April 9 ballot. Rankin noted the filing earns Dewey the nomination chance though the nonbinding primary delegates may still be morally obliged to favor the leading vote recipient. Dewey becomes the first Republican to enter Nebraska's primary.
Nomination papers for Vice President John N. Garner and a slate of delegates pledged to him were filed with Wisconsin secretary of state, making the April 2 primary the first test of his strength against President Roosevelt.
Washington merchants announce another Surprise Day in the state capital. A long list of shoppers from Washington and nearby towns is printed, naming many individuals who joined the previous event.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry M Wallace urged the Senate Finance Committee to extend the reciprocal trade agreement program, calling it a foundation stone for postwar world trade and essential to agriculture and general welfare. He said opposition claims it harms farmers are unfounded and noted some product duty reductions without seriously inconveniencing U S agricultural groups.
L Hammersley took 140 bushels of corn from Davis County farmer J H Roach and promised to sell it and remit the proceeds. He failed to deliver the money, resulting in a five year sentence at Fort Madison.

Blanche Genkins, a Wellston School teacher, slipped on ice while walking from her rooming house to school and suffered a double fracture of her left ankle. She was taken to Washington county hospital by Charles Harvey and will remain a few days before returning home to Ainsworth for recovery. Since Wellston had no classes today, County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill will arrange interim teaching.
Thirteen candidates filed nomination papers for county offices as June Republican primary nears. Auditors race appears most contested with four contenders, including deputies Walter Schroeder Mildred Norman Clarice Meek and Stan Kiesey. Treasurer rivals Marion George and Jesse Busby also seek the post, while E F Bauer and Emeet Nadolph target county supervisor terms. County attorney candidacy opened by John Owen, with incumbent Richard A Stewart not running. Other incumbents remain in place, and more filings possible before the June 3 primary. T Reagan Adams enters race for state representative from Washington County against E L Stewart.
The Ramseyer Hatchery invites farmers and poultry raisers to an open house on Saturday March 2 at 1413 East Washington Street Highway 92 east. Coffee and doughnuts from 11 am to 8 pm. 100 baby chicks given away plus souvenirs and prizes. Experts from Klein Manufacturing Purina Mills Dr Salsbury Laboratories and L K Russell will attend to assist with chicks hatching feeds and supplies.
Dr D C Barrett county health unit director says a few measles cases have appeared in junior high and Lincoln grade schools but urges parents to keep children under four away from crowds and unvaccinated youngsters. He notes Washington’s prior epidemic makes a large outbreak unlikely.

A tri motor plane crash near Bucaramanga killed twelve passengers including Benito Bustos former war minister and former Colombian minister to London. The craft was en route from Bogota to Cucuta and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
H E Cook of Mr Pleasant and Farm Bureau figure spoke to the Rotary Club on The Business Man's Interest In AAA. He traced farming history since 1922 noting prior programs failed and AAA stands as a nationwide endorsed agricultural plan. He said AAA aims to curb surpluses and suggests the nation owes farmers in return while others receive subsidies from the federal government.
Churchill told the House of Commons Britain is building five new battleships and submarine chasers and is prepared for greater Nazi attacks. He noted H M Nelson was damaged by a magnetic mine but rejoined the fleet. Germany has lost many U boats and could only build ten submarines in three months. Air activity rose with two German planes reported down off the British coast and RAF patrols over Berlin.
War communiqué from Helsinki reports heavy Finnish casualties inflicted on a Russian attack along the Mannerheim line near Viipuri. Russians were said to be repulsed after forcing Finns from Kiovisto island and attempting a flank via southeastern Viipuri bay, with Finnish forces capturing infantry arms and destroying eighteen tanks amid ongoing sharp fighting.
Elizabeth T. Scott widow of Civil War veteran James W. Scott died at home at 602 East Jefferson Street. She was born June 7, 1852 in Kortright New York, moved to Washington in 1867, worked as a dressmaker, and was active in church and civic groups. Funeral Friday at 10 AM at Jones Funeral Home with Dr P W Eastwood officiating. burial in Kim Grove cemetery. She had no immediate relatives.
