Arthur John son 85 Nashua farmer died in the Odd Fellows home at Mason City. He moved with his parents 75 years ago to a log cabin near Nashua and lived on the same farm until last fall. He was a widower.
Humboldt officers pursue a careless driver who struck the $2000 Taft memorial in Taft's park wrecking a wing of the granite two sided monument. The memorial honoring the Reverend Stephen H. Taft, founder of Humboldt, was completed last October.
Iowa City anniversary notes the 93 year history since its 1847 founding with the Old Capitol building. The university projects enrollment this year at 10,900, a new record, as alumni groups nationwide celebrate the milestone.

The Ottumwa board of education approves paying 600 for the land needed for the new 52000 athletic field at Ottumwa High School. Construction work is set to begin Thursday after discontent with the condemnation appraisal.
Albert Schultz 30, of Nashua, died in a New Hampton hospital from injuries after a 30 foot timber protruding from a truck struck Sciulla’s car as Schultz, his father in law Jake Biertz and brothers in law Albert and Edward Biertz stopped to help a Minnesota motorist. The group was returning to the highway when the accident occurred.
Vivian Sneldahl, 18, of Ames, died after a head on collision as she rode home from a dance. Five others were injured, including Robert Scott, 19, of Nevada, who drove the car. The crash occurred near a bridge east of the city with a semi truck driven by H. Dober of Chicago, who was unharmed.
Audubon county records show rural school enrollment decreased over seven years by 528 pupils total. Town schools also fell but more slowly, signaling a broad drop in student numbers across the district.
George Willey, 20, of Lola Kansas, an enrollee with the local civilian conservation corps camp, says he has found his grandmother Mrs. Sarah Willey, 81. He traced her through an old letter to his mother and received a reply from his uncle W. R. Willey of Hed.
A Journal telephone survey of 327 voters across town and country ranked eighty-one ads. The Washington Ministerial Association ad led with 51 votes, Barcaly’s Grocery 26, and Careon Plumbing 17. Multiple firms received honorable mentions and the survey noted strong rural participation despite delays.
A large attentive audience heard Rev. Vern Butler of Keota parishioners at the Baptist church Sunday night. He praised vital religion and the redeeming work of Christ. Pastor I. Fredmund led singing. Keota men John Ral tin and C. Cady offered prayers. Next Sunday Rev. and Mrs. C. FE. Hillis of Kalona speak with Darlene Sojka Haurolet Berg and Virginia Hasty singing. The crusade continues to Easter hoping to help many souls. Morning sermon focused on I Is Punished the sixth of Jesus seven words on the cross. Fifteen boys and girls from the pastor’s instruction class gave the lesson. Bible school classes next Sunday promise 160 percent attendance rewards.
Fire crews were called yesterday at 9 15 to South avenue C to tackle a small chimney fire at the home of Mrs Jonnie McCulley. The blaze was quickly extinguished with little damage. Mrs McCulley has been ill for some time after a stroke.

Secretary of State Hull urged continuation of the reciprocal trade agreement program as vital for postwar relations and world peace. He warned abandonment would risk exports under wartime limits and revive Hawley Smoot tariffs. Hull testified before the Senate Finance Committee amid House support for a three year extension beyond June 12.
The February 29 Corn Festival rally shifts to the afternoon at the YMCA. The central committee decided the meeting will start at 1:30 PM with a Washington Centennial celebration film showing. Farmers, business and professional people are invited to attend the event.
Melvin F. Miller a 30 year old part time preacher from Clayton Missouri was jailed after staying chained to a tree near Edith Perkins home for three days. Perkins told police she wants to be left alone and that Miller has bothered her for 12 years. Miller began a hunger strike upon imprisonment.
Walter R. Hugh a WPA project worker confessed planning and executing an 18066 daylight robbery at Marshall Field and Company with store guard Howard Fellows. Fellows was arrested in Davenport Iowa after police seized him on a tip and waived extradition. Hugh said he burned 5000 in checks and had 15055 of the loot when arrested.
The meeting at 1:30 pm aims to outline preliminary plans for the October Corn Festival. Chairman Carl Klein seeks input from farmers before forming permanent committees and invites farmers, business and professional men. coffee and doughnuts provided by the Chamber of Commerce.
In San Francisco on February 26 George Washington a civil engineer ordered his telephone reconnected he has had it disconnected every February 22 to prevent crowds singing Happy Birthday to you at his door.
A new car was stolen from Peter Fransten of Alton and recovered within fifteen minutes by authorities. Pintey Murphy Dickens, who had taken beer, crashed into a ditch near Alton and was immediately picked up by the highway patrolman.
The Rovers couple moved from Letts in 1928 leaving a clothes rack in the parsonage. They recently moved to Mediapolis to pastor at the Methodist church and found the rack again, having anticipated their moves and now reclaiming it after 12 years.
Rex Nickerson, 32, of Washington, was sentenced by Justice M. P. Rowe to ten days in the county jail for passing a false $18 check at Edmondson department store in Katona. He was arrested yesterday and brought before the justice. Nickerson had been released from jail on December 16, 1939, after a six month forgery sentence.
Special envoy Sumner Welles met with Benito Mussolini at a Venice palace for an hour and also conferred with Italian Foreign Minister Count Ciano. He decided to shorten his Rome visit and proceed to Berlin by midnight Tuesday. Welles arrived at 4 33 p m and left at 6 p m. Venice square was quiet with no onlookers.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabilhag announces the Washington county spelling contest will be held Saturday afternoon March 2 at the courthouse. The event starts at 1 30 pm with no written test and no separate divisions beyond lower grades 1 to 4 and upper grades 5 to 8. A complete contestants list will be published soon.
Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson sent William J. Phillips to Rome to witness talks with Mussolini’sCiano and with Benito Mussolini. The discussions, spanning 90 minutes, were described as pleasant and cordial as Welles begins a mission to examine the state of war and prospects for peace.
Alice Faye and Tony Martin, noted radio and screen stars, plan divorce proceedings after announcing attorney filings. Faye cites desire to end marriage from 1957 union while Martin cites separate careers as causing the split.

The seventh annual farm program dinner in Washington county will be held Friday evening March 8 at 7 in the Washington Methodist church. The planning committee with AAA members arranges an oyster supper and local talent music while radios will relay addresses by President Roosevelt and Secretary Henry Wallace at 9. Tickets are 40 cents, available through AAA committeemen or at the agricultural conservation office.
Muneral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Fredonia Methodist church for Mrs. Mary DeWitt conducted by Dr. I W Eastwood of the First Presbyterian church. A short service was held Saturday evening at the L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr Bastwood. Pallbearers were James Snyder James Lee William Gabirel Karl Wagner Charles Knott and Jesse Knott. Burial is in Indian Creek cemetery near Fredonia.
