Forest City hospital treated 13 year old Elwood Kelland son of Mr and Mrs O A Kelland after he walked out a second story window in his sleep. The boy was staying with neighbor Martel Mathews when the accident occurred around 5 am and the bed was found empty with shattered window glass.
Cedar Rapids police closed an investigation into the accidental shooting of six year old Dickie Smith who is recovering from a leg wound. The injury occurred when a gun was being emptied by Bill Pavlis at the boy’s home as Mrs. Smith showed a .38 caliber revolver.
A hearing on a charge of assault against Deputy Sheriff Walter Enyart in Ottumwa has been postponed. The time will be set later by Police Judge Co. Maddy before whom the charge was filed. Enyart is alleged to have struck a juvenile prisoner after a jail disturbance in the cell with two other inmates.
Ottumwa report says Tiss Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen Local 591 won the majority of votes to act as bargaining agent for the Iowa Poultry Producers Marketing Association. The election, supervised by the National Labor Relations Board, followed a hearing on a petition by the employer, a farm cooperative poultry plant.
In Washington DC the house appropriations committee backed a flood control budget omitting the six million dollar Coralville dam. The panel kept to a seventy million dollar base, with a ninety five million dollar figure only if the Coralville project would be included, per Maj Gen Julian J Sehley chief of engineers testimony before a subcommittee.

Sheriff V T Lacy called the Taylor County court clerk's vault theft the work of an insider. A sum of 27.50 in cash was stolen when Clerk Thomas L. Kuhn opened the office. Between 300 and 400 in checks were left in the cashier drawer. Access is believed to have come from a spiral stairway from the clerk's office to the courtroom above.
Wayne Hanson spoke to a full house on South of the Border and the need for the United States to build better ties with Latin American nations. He highlighted trade, the Pan American Union, scholarships, and cultural exchange as steps toward continental solidarity, and described Mexico's cooperative economic shift toward socialism and stability.
Floodwaters from four days of rain roared through northern California valleys as rivers rose rapidly. State engineer Edward Hyatt opened floodgates to divert 80 000 acres of bypass land easing levy pressure. The Adams proceed to retire, John Zimmering buys the farm, and community members attend the first sale on the property with around 600 people present as livestock and produce sell well.
Rome announces Italy's racial law against Jews becomes effective March 1. Passed June 29, 1939, it bars Jews from office, public foundations, associations, committees, and wearing uniforms. It also prevents call to military service in any branch.

Mrs. J. W. Scott died at her home yesterday after a long illness. She is survived by granddaughter Mrs. Clint Mc Gee and grandson Nial Nicholson of Minneapolis. Funeral services set for 10:30 tomorrow at L A Jones funeral home with Minneapolis relatives arriving this afternoon.
Senator Joseph O’Mahony a Democrat of Wyoming testified before the Senate Finance Committee calling the administration’s reciprocal trade agreement program clearly unconstitutional. He argued the pacts act as treaties or revenue laws by altering import duty rates as the House approved bill would extend the program for three years.
