Laurie Shalla daughter of Mr and Mrs Larry Shalla won the spelling contest at Washington Junior High School Thursday. Don Smith finished second and Robert Graber third. Alternate is Lori Redlinger.
The South East Iowa Bandmasters Association Elementary and Junior High Music Contest will be held at Sigourney on Saturday February 26. More than 130 Washington Community Schools band students are expected to participate, with BGM Eddyville English Valley Keota Montezuma Oskaloosa Pekin Sigourney and Waco also sending groups. Scout Troop 242 will run a paper drive in Washington on Saturday March 19 starting at 9 a.m. Papers must be bundled or bagged and limited to city limits.
The Iowa Department of Justice cautions merchants about checks from International Mail Order Company of Norman Oklahoma that are valid only toward the purchase of one set of waterless stainless steel cookware. Ted Johnson, executive director of the Washington Chamber of Commerce, received the notice and is asked to warn business people to avoid cashing the checks.
Washington's Dave Hilfman advanced to the state Class AA wrestling semifinals in Des Moines by pinning Bart Thein of Strawberry Point in 4 32 in the quarterfinals. The WHS sophomore faces Ralph Reicks of Turkey Valley in the semis as Reicks carries a 29 2 record. Hillman led Thein 11 0 before the third period pin as Coach Gonshorowski praised his his wrestler's performance.
Washington UPI reports Admiral Stansfield Turner 53 is appointed as the new U.S. Director of Central Intelligence. His Senate confirmation was unanimous. He resigns as commander of NATO southern forces to lead the CIA and head intelligence, a post created by Ford to coordinate all intelligence agencies to curb past abuses.
Singer Anita Bryant claims her bid to host a syndicated television show sponsored by Singer Sewing Machine Co. has been canceled after she spoke in support of traditional America. Bryant held a news conference at her Miami Beach home and said advertisers faced pressure and inundated with mail.
The Senate moved to ban large jaw traps to protect children and animals from harm. Senator Bert Priebe noted the traps kill instantly and target beaver, while coon dogs, worth about $1,500, are getting caught. Senator Elizabeth Miller discussed hunters losing valuable dogs to the traps.
Richard D. Adams Kalona mayor pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the Aug 20 1976 slaying of Judith Rae Adams. District Judge Ira F Morrison sentenced him to 20 years at Ft Madison with seven days deducted for pretrial jail time. Judge rejected defense request for minimum sentence noting potential parole sooner than average.
President Carter will do whatever is necessary to protect U.S. lives in Uganda, with White House officials denying Amin’s claim that 5,000 Marines are ready to invade. About 175 Americans in Uganda were told they could leave or stay, with assurances no harm would come.

Proponents push certificate of need to limit expensive programs while opponents fear direct rate regulation and rationing. Key figures include Rep. Gregory Cusack Rep. Joan Lipsky Rep. President Carter proposed Congress create a new cabinet level Energy Department to regulate oil and gas prices and oversee research while excluding atomic energy regulation. The plan would abolish the Federal Power Commission, the Federal Energy Administration and the ERDA, and shift duties from Interior, Defense and SEC. NRC to stay outside the department. Syracuse police said Leroy Cotton, 30, an unemployed construction worker and resident of the building, held a pregnant teen and her young daughter hostage in a shabby South Side apartment after gunning down another man with a high powered rifle. Neighbors alerted a patrol at about 2 am and police were fired upon through a second floor door.
