The Washington City Council accepted the 1975 76 budget proposal for 1 256 962 and scheduled a public hearing for 7 p.m. Wednesday March 5. The tax levy is projected to rise about 4 mills mainly for debt service.
There were no classes at Washington High School and nearby schools for a second day. Bright sunshine and milder temperatures helped the cleanup from the season's heaviest snowfall. Main highways were near normal, though blowing and drifting snow created hazards. County roads remained snowpacked but passable, while city crews cleared streets to restore traffic lanes.
The Board of Education will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the School Administration Building. The main item is the second reading of Curriculum Council recommendations on junior high curriculum revisions and added guidance services.
Plans are complete for an open house at Colonial Manors in Columbus Junction to mark its formal opening. The 65 bed care center will offer tours March 1 and 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. each day with refreshments served.
UPI reports easing winter grip across the Midwest with lingering travel hazards. Freezing rain sleet and high winds disrupt Indiana Ohio and New York roads while Iowa snowdrifts and New England sleet slow traffic. OPEC ministers pledge no near term oil price rise or production cuts, aiming to freeze prices until Sept. 30.
Elijah Muhammad, spiritual head of the Nation of Islam known as the Black Muslims, died at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. He had suffered congestive heart failure for over three weeks and was 77 years old.
House Democrats vote to instruct the Rules Committee to allow a floor vote on attaching repeal of the oil depletion allowance to a $21.3 billion tax cut measure. The plan aims to end a major oil industry tax break and deliver rebates of up to $200 on 1974 taxes plus 1975 tax cuts.
The Washington Concert Association closed its 1974 75 season with the New York Vocal Arts Ensemble at the high school. Despite a storm a large audience enjoyed a polished program of chamber works and jazz pieces led by Raymond Beegle. Foster songs delivered with depth and sincerity drew particular praise from patrons and board members signing up for 1975 76 memberships.
Strong northwesterly winds continue today at 25 to 45 mph with drifting snow northeast. Highs 35 to 40. Tonight winds ease to 15 to 30 mph. Partly cloudy skies with lows 20 to 25.
Democratic leaders in Des Moines announced a split of 14 major issues to be handled by each chamber. The House will take up corporate farming land use wage collection and antitrust measures with farm issues guiding further action. the Senate focuses on housing authority elderly benefits strip mining rail service and occupational health and safety reform among others.
Gov. Robert D. Ray, not favoring no-knock authority, praised the Senate for approving a no-knock provision in Iowa's Criminal Code revision. He called the debateadequate and noted restrictions. The measure allows entry without warning only if a magistrate is convinced the suspect would escape or officers face harm, with uniformed officers and magistrate approval required.
Iowa farmers paid 62 million in 1973 individual income tax on farm earnings, a 69 percent rise from 1972. Total Iowa income tax topped 297.8 million, up 29.9 percent from 1972, with 1,316,563 returns filed by June 30.
A large blaze in Hampton Iowa gutted Anthony's Clothing Store and heavily damaged a two story brick building, with smoke and water damage to three nearby shops. Estimated damage initially placed at 200000 dollars as crews from Hampton Sheffield and Latimer fought the fire from about 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. No injuries were reported and the cause remained under investigation with furnace failure ruled out. The Hampton State Bank was evacuated as flames spread to its roof and surrounding stores.
