Two Washington residents reported the season’s first robins. Mrs. Cecil Hawkins at Linn Hollow Trailer Court saw a robin at 8 05 a.m. in her yard bird feeder and shortly after Mrs. M E DeLashmutt spotted another in their West Main Street backyard.
Washington municipal airport faces a public hearing at 7 30 p m Thursday on Pacemaker Buildings Inc request for a 10 year lease with two five year renewals for a 48 by 40 foot plot to host a hangar. Rent set at 10 a year with ownership to revert to the airport commission at lease end.
The first of a four part series on the futures market and forward selling for farmers starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Washington County Farm Bureau Building. Sponsored by the County Extension Service, speaker Marvin Skadberg from Iowa State University will discuss Basics of Futures Trading. Subsequent sessions cover grain and livestock trading and using outlooks in trading.
Washington County history officials and a group home committee opposed demolishing Blair House, seeking 90 day stay to salvage the historic former City Hall as a foster care site. Council plans a demolition hearing next week amid petitions and preservation arguments.
President Ford urged Congress to act faster on the antirecession income tax cut, warning it could take until June. He blasted perceived dilatory tactics, noted hearings in the Senate next week, and pressed for a single majority plan while detailing Cambodia aid and foreign policy cautions.
Emergency Medical Training students in Washington practice real aid on volunteer “victims” under three physicians supervision. Gail Hamilton, Bob Anderson, and Deputy Sheriff John Combs are attended as emergency scenarios unfold. Ambulance crews from Sigourney, Columbus Junction, and Washington assist along with local National Guard members.
Ralph Kleese announces the 1975 Red Cross membership and fund drive launching March 1 across Washington County. The drive supports services for servicemen families veterans disaster safety and first aid along with hospital and veterans administration programs. Local chairmen and township coordinators are listed, urging wider donations beyond the traditional dollar due to rising costs.
Rep. Greg Cusack of Davenport proposed a state housing code to consolidate existing safety rules under the Department of Health. The bill would let local boards enforce the code with warrants for single family owner-occupied homes and require inspections for rental units before leasing. It ooks to create a state housing authority and offer tax incentives for improvements with a five year property tax moratorium.
Weather updates note clearing tonight with lows in the mid 20s as West to northwest winds ease. The Washington Junior High pop concert titled Juniors a Poppin is moved to Tuesday March 11 at 7 30 p m in the gym due to heavy snow and school closures. A Washington High School registration meeting for 10th and 11th grade parents is set for Thursday February 27 from 7 to 9 p m in Room 10, a small session with one counselor to discuss next year registration course offerings graduation and college and trade options.
St James school moves kindergarten and new-student registration to Friday February 28 from 8 30 to 10 30 am in the school gym. Children must be five by Sept 15 1975 to enroll. Bring baptismal or birth certificate. Parishioners pay no tuition. non parishioners face 250 for first child 150 for second and book fees for others.
Don Wyngarden juvenile probation officer elected temporary chairman of the eight member steering committee pursuing a boys group foster home in Washington County. Mrs. Phil Musgrove elected secretary treasurer. The group opened a bank account and will apply for non profit status in Iowa with Welcome House Inc. as the tentative name.
The Washington YMCA annual membership and fund drive raised 23882 50 dollars surpassing the 23500 dollar target. Workers are urged to finish prospect calls in the next days to officially close the campaign. The victory dinner in the Community Room hosted Y's Men’s Club members with Bob Luther presiding and Dave Eider speaking on community support. Don Turner announced final totals as Jack Kiesey co chaired the campaign.
