Fire hits residence. second alarm for odor at Wagon Wheel

Washington firemen responded to two calls this morning. At 4 45 a.m. a blaze at 310 North Third Avenue likely renders the home uninhabitable after a prior similar fire. At 9 45 a.m. crews checked the Wagon Wheel after a heat tape odor triggered the alarm.

New Chest officers and board named for 1975

The Washington Community Chest held its first meeting of the year at the YMCA on February 19 with President Delbert Dalrymple presiding. The board of fifteen directors will rotate five new members yearly for three year terms.

Perry mother named Iowa Mother of 1975

Jean Willis of Perry, age 51, was selected as Iowa Mother of 1975 by the Iowa Mother's Association, chosen from 17 candidates. Nominated by the Dallas County Women's Political Caucus, she balances motherhood with an AEA speech and hearing clinician career and Republican activism, while her four children pursue college degrees.

Criminal justice course offered by Kirkwood in Washington

Kirkwood Community College offers a spring criminal justice class in Washington meeting Tuesdays from March 4 to May 27. Instructor John McSweeny of the Iowa Bureau of Adult Corrections Services leads the four credit course with a $13 per credit tuition and a $15 admissions fee for credit seekers. registration is March 4.

Governor Ray warns tariffs strain Midwest and farmers

Des Moines Gov. Robert D. Ray argues higher oil tariffs would hit the Midwest hard, hurting farmers and low income people. Tragic four die in Norwoodville house fire

Four victims die in a Norwoodville Iowa fire including three children Jody Lynn age 7 Carrisa Jean age 4 and Jeri Daren age 3 and babysitter Linda Lee Wood age 11. Fire started in the kitchen possibly from a skillet left on the stove. Delaware Township and Saylor Township volunteers fought the blaze for about three hours.

Iowa City Woman Killed in U S 218 Crash

Fern Ida Hay 65 of Iowa City died when the car she rode in with her grandson Robert Hay 19 veered onto a soft shoulder and crossed into the northbound lane on U S 218 south of Riverside. Grimmer of Winfield avoided injury in the collision.

Winter Storm Smashes Washington Area With Snow

The Washington area digs out after five inches of heavy snow with 1 to 4 more inches forecast. A head on crash on county road 638 left four people injured, none seriously. Schools closed and road travel hazardous as crews work through the night to clear drifted streets.

Washington woman donates 400 acre farm to University of Iowa

Dora Wright, 87, of Washington Iowa, donated a 400 acre Wellman area farm to the University of Iowa Foundation. The gift, valued at about a half million dollars, will fund a charitable remainder annuity trust providing Wright an income for life with remainder to the university for medical research.
