Washington High School students Jane Sotelo and Mark Keedy are recognized as outstanding performers in the Iowa High School Speech Association state contest held February 23 in Bettendorf. Carmen Griggs mentors their duet acting entry.
William V. Bergren was appointed plant manager of McQuay Perfex Inc. operations in Washington. He comes from Modine Manufacturing Co where he led plants in La Porte Indiana and Pemberville Ohio Bolted Radiator Plant. Bergren, a Michigan State chemical engineering graduate, will relocate with his wife Lorraine after housing is arranged. the appointment was effective February 18.

Des Moines UPI says legislative leaders abandon action on all 44 governor Ray’s proposals and focus on four major bills. By week seven, four major measures passed both chambers while several other priorities await action. Leaders cite time constraints and plan to advance key items like the DOT, sales tax exemption, and education funding, aiming for a mid April adjournment.
Steven Wayne Stewart received a 10 year suspended sentence for forgery and probation. Daryl A Richardson pled guilty to larceny with 24 months’ probation. Robert Wayne Butterbaugh admitted DUI and got a three month jail term suspended during probation. Greggory J. Karr pleaded not guilty to concealing stolen property and drug possession with trial set for March 4. Carroll F. Sleichter sought more time with hearing set for March 10.
UPI reports Henry Kissinger began a high risk mission to resolve the Syria Israel impasse. He met with Nixon and Egyptian leader Sadat as he prepared to travel to Damascus with Sisco, aiming to secure access to POW lists and progress on disengagement amid cautious optimism.
Senate leader Mike Mansfield urges nationwide quotas to equalize access while energy chief William Simon argues a federal allocation program can ease lines without full rationing. Clifford Case pushes for immediate rationing. Nixon veto possible if Congress passes it.
Rep. Mary O Halloran, Cedar Falls Democrat, vows a floor battle to advance a bottle ban bill aimed at ending non returnable containers. She argues litter reduction energy savings and job creation, with redemption centers and 2 to 5 cent refunds. Opponents cite retailer and storage concerns.
Fifth and sixth grade students in Washington earned 43 Division I ratings and 23 Division II ratings at the Southeast Iowa Band Directors Association district contest in Williamsburg. Names span flutes, oboe, bassoon, clarinets, saxophones, trumpet, trombone, tuba, bells, percussion, and harp, with solo and duet entries. Accompanists and chaperones are listed, and director Fred Stark praised results and thanked helpers including Irvan Rich.
Washington Junior High School led 36 entrants at the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters solo and ensemble contest in Williamsburg on February 23 with Superior, Excellent, and Good ratings. Listed are students earning Superior and Excellent in flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, horn, drums, and woodwind ensembles and duets including multiple trios and duos.
