A coalition of 13 northwest Iowa legislators led by Rep. Lyle Stephens urge Gov. Ray to rebuke the Highway Commission’s plan to build a limited access expressway from Sioux City to the Minnesota border. They favor upgrading existing routes US 75 and Iowa 60 to four lanes, preserving farmland and spurring growth, and warn of turning the issue over to the governor if ignored. Fire kills pigs on farm near Wellman
A Friday morning blaze at Steve Norman's one-year-old farrowing facility on rural route 3 near Wellman killed 16 gilts and three pig litters and destroyed the farrowing house. Neighbors reported the fire at 7:20 am and Wellman firefighters contained it with some livestock saved and little surrounding damage. Cause is under investigation, no damage estimate released.

Would-be hijacker Byck dies by own hand during shootout
Samuel Joseph Byck 44 of Philadelphia killed two aboard a Delta jet at Baltimore Washington International and shot himself during a police confrontation. The autopsy cited a self-inflicted .22 caliber wound as the immediate cause after Byck fired on officers and slain a security guard, pilot, and copilot during the hijacking attempt.
