In REVERUIY HILLS on February 25 a satirical note questions the source of the Wickersham committee's opinions and critiques the lame duck term tied to a delayed post office project and unfinished national treasury reforms. The piece mocks political accountability and budget expectations.
The Iowa Board of Railway Commissioners granted franchises to Iowa Southern Utilities to extend electric transmission lines in Washington County. The seven mile network will serve 28 farmers for lighting and power, with lines near West Chester, Washington, Seventy-six Township, Ainsworth, and Olds in Henry County. Additional franchise hearings for about fifteen miles are set for March 27, and more farmer lines are expected this year.
In Des Moines a legislative inquiry heard that University of Iowa staff supplied materials and labor for a Bates property retaining wall. Foreman C L Rees said he built the wall for 10 months, using over 2,000 sacks of cement from university supplies and the university cement mixer, with some cement bought from Wallacre Lumber. The university hauled materials and its blacksmith repaired the mixer. Other witnesses showed university officers paid for or used for private tasks, while another contractor testified of work done for university officials. Separately, Iowa Senate approved a bill to create a state Court of Claims with a locally seated judge to hear state claim cases, reducing the need to appear at the legislature. the Pelter bill to cut state officer salaries was debated but postponed.

In Dayton Ohio five masked men robbed Union Trust central branch of 18000 with gunfire. in New Orleans three bandits took 26000 from Whitney Hawks St Roach branch after a public safety item battle that injured a bystander.
A small roof fire at Mrs. George Alexander’s home at 202 Madison Street was reported at 8 15 this afternoon. Sparks from the chimney caused the blaze which was quickly extinguished with water. the hole measured about 9 inches in diameter.
Des Moines reports that all state department heads are cutting expenditures after Gov. Dan W. Turner called an economy meeting with the legislature's appropriations committees. The group voted that departmental heads reduce their financial requests and file revised figures with the governor.
Emery Curtis of Rock Island a former employee of Welf Floral company acre underwent an appendicitis operation on Monday night in a local hospital.
In Chicago on February 25 1931 Al Capone known as Scarface public enemy No 4 appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty to contempt charges. He then surrendered to city police on a vagrancy warrant and was escorted from the federal building amid crowds. Capone posted bond and was released. a separate note reports Mrs J K Dayton of Keota undergoing surgery at Washington County Hospital and her sisters Esther and Helen Hanley connected to the family.
William Hale Thompson won the Chicago mayoral Republican primary with about 67,800 votes, defeating John H. Lyle and two other candidates. Anton J. Cermak led Democrats with over 225,000 votes as Thompson heads to the April 7 runoff to decide the next four years at City Hall.
Reginald A. Skidmore, marine superintendent at Callao Peru, was killed by a stray bullet while lunching at his club near an old fortress where insurgents had taken refuge.
Fifty petit jurors were drawn for the March term presided by Judge J. G. Patterson. The list includes twenty two women and twenty eight men with duty beginning the second week unless ordered otherwise.
R H McCarty announced Harold Putnam will be the new deputy sheriff effective March 1, succeeding Walter Schroeder who resigns to join the county auditor’s office. Putnam, with army service before and after the war, is still learning the duties but is considered to have strong qualifications for the post.
Coroner W S Norton conducted an autopsy on 20 year old Very Jordan who died Monday night. A chemical analysis was ordered after the preliminary finding suggested poisoning as a possible cause. The sample was sent to Iowa City for testing. Jordan was said to reside in Iowa City.
The Cincinnati passenger train of the Louisville and Nashville plunged from an open drawbridge into the Mobile River. Four crew members drowned as the engine and baggage coach sank. Passengers were reported safe. The wreck occurred in an isolated area with a late relief effort from Mobile. The drawbridge was reportedly opened for a tugboat, and an automatic block system should have warned the engineer. Boat crew helped recover bodies.
H D Cherryholmes of West of Crawfordsville was rushed to Washington county hospital with severe facial injuries from a morning automobile crash near Crawfordsville. His left eye was removed, nose severed, and forehead cut, while his left leg suffered lesser injuries. He was driving his granddaughter Jean Cherryholmes to school. the other car belonged to Elmer Young at Murphy farm vicinity.
Flames spurt from Deep Rock Oil wells in the south Wewoka field near the city. A 10,000 barrel per day producer and an 81 million cubic feet gas well ignited late yesterday as crews battled to close master gates or use nitroglycerin to snuff the blaze.
Ray Nicholson traveled to Des Moines to assist his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nicholson in moving to the Boyd Stevens farm.
