Hollywood letter writer imagines George Washington at age 199 would view seven million unemployed in peacetime and ration distribution, claiming the country has reversed the old system where wartime effort rises while peace brings scarcity. He jokes Washington would sue for being called father.
Rev J Wo Krenmyer pastor of the Ainsworth Methodist church spoke at the Rotary gathering on Washington's birthday. He framed a broadly patriotic address noting world unrest and predicting a dawn after twilight amid a shift to a new civilization. He called for hope in the new generation while praising the club for inviting him and described a change in meeting leadership during the January February birthdays. The next meeting, March 9, will be in Crawfordsville as an evening event.
Chicago voters faced a heavy security presence of 70 000 guards and police in the first half of the municipal primary. By 11 p m about 500 000 of 1 340 566 registered had voted for or against Mayor William Hale Thompson as irregularities were investigated across 2 987 precincts.
Paris reports a Franco British verbal accord on naval limits aimed at ending the France Italy deadlock and aligning with the London treaty. Britain plans to consult Mussolini in Rome while France eyes a 620000 ton navy with reductions in submarines torpedo boats and destroyers. Italy seeks parity.
The Hi Y Club and Girl Reserves prepare an 8 15 p m show at the high school auditorium starring Marquis the magician. Tickets sold out and more seats will be available at the door. Marquis arrives with strong recommendations from reliable sources.
The Ministerial Association of Washington county convened at the Y this morning with eighteen ministers in attendance. Five speakers addressed topics on The Church School, followed by a general discussion. The room featured February themed decor. Mrs. James O. Wolfe arrived from Concordia Kansas to join her husband, an engineer overseeing the natural gas pipeline construction, residing at Mrs. Elmer Wells' apartment.
UP W. D. Archie of Sidney Iowa was confirmed by the senate today as a member of the Iowa state highway commission completing the board’s slate. Others confirmed were Thomas Way of Des Moines and C C Reipo of Burlington, the third appointment by Governor Dan W Turner.
Mrs. Fred Weirather of Winfield shopped here today, visiting the store and browsing aisles during a routine midday shopping trip.

Added to 90 found last year, the trove totals 1600 in coins from 1850 to 1899. The bag rotted, cans rusted, and the mystery money prompts local speculation about its origin and kin connections to the Campbell and Hayes families.
Washington high school will send its first and second teams to Sigourney for Wednesday night games. The outings were planned early but overlooked amid Little Six and county tournament excitement. Washington expects a tough challenge from Sigourney, which is usually strong in basketball.
Bloomfield junior college hosts Washington junior college Friday night in a rematch after a 64 to 12 loss at Bloomfield. Washington recently buried Centerville 101 to 19 while Bloomfield struggles to hit 16 percent from the floor. Washington, Blackhawks conference champion, will represent southeastern Iowa at the state tournament if more games are not added before the event.

Mr and Mrs Claire Kent and Mr and Mrs Clarence Jacobs attend the Des Moines auto show. Paul Leeper of Wellston planned to visit Joe Good's in Wayland today.
Explanatory testimony by W H Gemmill, Iowa board of education secretary, was presented to a joint legislative committee examining University of Iowa documents. Verne Marshall charged officials with awareness of athletic department issues tied to Iowa’s Big Ten expulsion for proselyting.
Des Moines February 24 The Iowa conference of commanders and adjutants of the American Legion reaffirmed its opposition to making military training optional at two Iowa colleges. The meeting charged the movement would cripple national defense. Judge advocate Casper Shenk said paid New York workers are soliciting support against compulsory drill in Iowa. State Commander Maurice Cahill of Cedar Rapids accused the committee on militarism in education and the American Civil Liberties Union of interjecting in the issue and criticized the union as unpatriotic.
In a three school contest Washington defeated Brighton by a unanimous decision in one section of the triangular debates among Brighton Davenport and Washington. Davenport defeated Brighton negative team at Brighton also by unanimous decision. The upcoming Davenport Washington clash will decide who advances to the state elimination series with the same chain store system issue debated.
Dr. F W Eastwood county Red Cross chairman said donations reached 1039.14 dollars, well above the seven dollar county quota. The latest gift came from Brighton amounting to 42 dollars sent to county headquarters. many towns and Washington residents contributed voluntarily without solicitation.
The Supreme Court unanimously rules the prohibition amendment valid and properly ratified by state legislatures, reversing Judge William Clark's New Jersey ruling. Justice Roberts states Congress has sole discretion over ratification method and notes several amendments also touch citizens' rights. The lower court order is reversed.
O. K. Clapper came back this morning on the Golden State Limited after two months at the Fred Steck home in Los Angeles. Yesterday’s shoppers included T. E. Johnson of Columbus Junction F. M. Line denmeyer of West Chester and Mrs. Thomas Flanders and daughter Shirley Ann of Keota. Mrs. William A. Shalla and Miss Cecil Dunbar also returned from Chicago after a visit with Miss Ruth Ballard.
