A 40 000 blaze gutted the Davenport armory garage and damaged mobile equipment of 100 soldiers who had arrived from Fort Sheridan to guard Mississippi River bridges. Pvt Kenneth Gilstad of Grandview Wisconsin suffered severe burns while trying to save an army jeep. The fire began when an oil stove exploded in the mechanics room around 5 pm. Soldiers moved 17 military cars out before the heat forced them back.

Earl Darland, a $3 farmer northeast of Oskaloosa, died in a house fire that also badly burned his nine year old son Richard and his sister Mrs Frank Rodabaugh of Minneapolis. Mrs Darland, bedridden with a twelve day old baby, escaped by breaking a window and dropping the other children to safety.

Mrs Vera Boyer 49 Dies in Washington Hospital
Funeral services for Mrs Vera Coats Boyer 49 will be held Tuesday at two o'clock in the I A Jones funeral home chapel. Dr R C Keagy will conduct the service and burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. She died Saturday night at 7 in Washington county hospital after years of illness. Born July 24 1892 in Bardolph Illinois she moved to Washington at age twelve and married Raymond Clayton Boyer in June 1912. She was a chiropractor and member of the Methodist church. Surviving are three sons David Donald Richard of Washington and daughter Mrs George Knorr of Van Wert Ohio.
