A Des Moines column notes the war effort on the food front. Roy F. Hendrickson, administrator of the Farm Administration, urges farmers to meet wartime production targets and warns that failure would blame everyone.
Baldrige announces Washington county must raise 1.62 million in bonds and stamps yearly for the war. Volunteers are urged to help sell by organizing township committees, with a voluntary plan and a permanent county record to credit all purchases.
Treasury urges a regular purchase plan for defense bonds during the war. County headquarters seek volunteers to work locally on bond drive, with postal replies to the defense bond chairman in Washington Iowa. Emphasizes bonds as the preferred funding method over taxes and requests adjustable weekly or monthly allotments.
Senator Clyde L. Herring, announcing in Washington, said the war department is considering locating a large munitions plant in western Iowa, near Loveland, about 19 miles north of Council Bluffs, contingent on securing 15 000 kilowatts of electricity. The decision to build in western Iowa was stated as definite.
A National Farm Institute discussion in Des Moines proposed organizing farm youths into army like divisions for agricultural work. Edward A. O Neal president of the American Farm Bureau Federation urged plans to keep farm boys in agricultural labor and make them feel they are contributing.

Dean R A Kuever of the State University of Iowa college of pharmacy says women may fill pharmacist roles due to war duties. He notes five years needed to train a pharmacist and urges capable women with degrees, currently housewives, to consider entering the profession when demand is imperative.
Mrs. Freelander, 90, perished in a Chariton house fire caused by her clothing catching from a coal range. Neighbors alerted firefighters after the blaze. the body was found inside the home. Born in Sweden she had lived in Lucas county sixty years and is survived by Ruth Freelander and August Lindquist.
Census bureau projects that if U S population stabilizes at 150 million the nation would have about 2 660 people aged 100 or more. The figure highlights aging demographics and long term population structure.
John Schneider of Cedar Rapids, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Schneider of Washington, has enlisted in the coast artillery not the coast guard as yesterday’s report stated. He is visiting Cedar Rapids and plans to depart midweek for his assignment location after a weekend at home. He previously served three years in the regular army and four years in Troop D, 113th Cavalry of Washington.
Des Moines reports Labor groups with high wages should take proportional cuts to avert harm to national strength and morale as production shifts to wartime goods. Henderson opposes tying wages to cost of living, urges relief focused on sub standard workers and warns against widening pay gaps benefiting strong bargainers.
Iowa City February 21 state agents seized two slot machines at the Bill Zeman tavern in Lone Tree the fourth raid in Johnson County in two months County attorney information will be filed Monday against Zeman Fourteen other machines have been seized in prior raids bringing the total to sixteen across the area.
A large locomotive hauling copper ore cars exploded in a tunnel one and a half miles north of Abingham Utah. Two trainmen were killed in the blast. Authorities reported no survivors among the crew at the scene.
Reports indicate a British steamship was sunk about 80 miles off the Brazilian coast as of February 21.
The census bureau proposes a central index of deaths to flag fraudulent birth records. Federal investigators report some individuals have used deceased persons’ birth certificates as their own.

Gladys Ethel Lockett sues Oda Lee Lockett for divorce and custody of a minor son citing a 1915 marriage and 1940 separation with Eardley Bell as attorney. J C Farrington sues Esther Farrington for custody of three minors from a 1938 marriage with Baldrige Bailey listed as counsel. A separate suit by Bessie Navy seeks 2000 dollars from Lillian Maenck after a tavern trap door incident on February 11, 1942 with L J Kehoe as counsel. Judge P J Siegers presided, planning another January term court day.
Cedar Rapids Mrs. Hir am CC Schitzman filed a $20000 damage suit in district court over her husband’s death in a fall down an elevator shaft at the New Smulekoff store on January 7. She alleges negligence and names three defendants.
A United Press report from Singapore cites a fierce three day naval battle with eighteen Japanese ships sunk or damaged, including five cruisers, as Allied and American forces contest the Java Bali area. Dutch and U.S. forces report heavy losses on both sides while air and sea actions continue around Soerabaja and Bali.
World Day of Prayer service drew wide attendance at St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church. Representatives from local churches participated in the interdenominational program themed I Am the Way with Carolyn Hamilton leading group singing. Darlene Hamston performed a marimba solo.
The 8,200 ton tanker Pan Massachusetts sank in a flaming sea after torpedo and shelling by a submarine off the Atlantic coast. About 20 lives were lost, eighteen survivors reported today. The ship, built in 1918 in Alameda California, was owned by National Bulk Carriers Inc and based in New York.
In Montevideo on February 21 the Herrorista party issued a manifesto naming Dr Cesar Charlone as president. Party members tried to force entry to Congress, met by police charges. The uprising targets President Alfredo Baldomir, who backed hemispheric defense and had dissolved Congress amid a political crisis and looming election.
AMES F S Anderson 46 a trucker of Ames is jailed in Lyndon Kansas on $1000 bond for manslaughter after a wheel came off his truck leaving it on the highway and causing a car to crash killing a woman. He is bound to the March term for trial.
Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa said it is not only possible but probable that the Vichy government is permitting Dakar to be used as a refueling base for German submarines.
